"SEOUL — South Korea has enacted a law allowing the use of 'chemical castration' on convicted pedophiles, the Justice Ministry said on Sunday, becoming the first Asian country to permit the punishment.

The law gives judges the power to order sex offenders who have attacked children under the age of 16 to undergo a medical procedure, widely known as chemical castration, which can last for up to 15 years.

"The law takes effect as of today," a ministry official said on condition of anonymity, adding that dozens of criminals be sentenced to the punishment this year.

The legislation has generated strong protests from human rights bodies."

Stopping a pedophile from being sexually attracted to children is about as likely as stopping me from being sexually attracted to adult women. I'm all for this if the person is a repeat offender.

Per Wikipedia...

"Physical castration appears to be highly effective as, historically, it results in a 20-year re-offense rate of less than 2.3% vs. 80% in the untreated control group, according to a large 1963 study involving a total of 1036 sex offenders by the German researcher A. Langelüddeke, among others[45]—much lower than what was otherwise expected. Compare to overall sex offender recidivism rates."

Screw Chemical...Go Physical!

Removal of the head should do the trick and drive recidivism rates to 0%

This is great news. Too bad the ******* on capital hill will never have the balls to pull something like this off.

Requiring criminals to take specific drugs after committing a crime is about as slippery a slope as exists in the justice system, I understand all hesitation towards instituting this as a federal policy.

I do remember hearing about is treatment in Florida however, don't remember if it was an active law or simply something that was proposed.

Well, I'm with you guys. Since I'm naturally not a fan of pedophiles, any punishment they get is fine, even if it's more punishment than they deserve for that crime.

For example, if this article said they should be tortured for 15 years then flayed, I'd be in support. So I can see why you (and I) want to castrate people in the 21st century instead of normal, more humane punishments. It's in our nature, I think we should bring back the inquisition personally.

Craig, I know you're full of ****, but please feel free to have a daughter and then come back and tell us how you feel about this.

Thanks for reading :) :)

Is chemical castration a punishment, or the removal of an otherwise uncontrollable urge?

Exactly. Recidivism is very high among pedophiles. It is because (imo) their desire to commit their crime is directly tied to their sex-drive. The ONLY way for them to achieve sexual satisfaction is to hurt children. Just like you couldn't put me in psycho-therapy to cure my sexual desire for women, you can't typically "cure" a pedophile's attraction to children. Taking a step, like chemical castration, that protects children from a pedophile seems practical and appropriate, especially for repeat offenders.

Sounds like an 8th amendment violation.

I don't think that an action taken specifically to protect the innocent, and that is no more cruel then an equal amount of time behind bars, is a violation of the 8th amendment. There's nothing unusual about it because it relates specifically to the crime the person has committed and is intended to prevent that person's ability to commit the same crime in the future.

Sounds like the disease of addiction.

I'd be all for it if these guys decided they wanted help and volunteered for it. Doubt that happens though.
