SLC Dunk - Utah Jazz vs Toronto Raptors: The Overtone

We can complain about the refs and the mascots(?) and no George Hill and too much Mack all we want.

Bottom line is Toronto wanted it more than Utah did last night.

Loose balls, deflections, everything was gobbled up by Toronto down the stretch - not a coincidence.

I'm sorry but this is just ********! This team wants to win just as much as anyone, but even discarding the refs (who I'm on record calling a big factor), we fell late, to one of the few teams that we should expect to lose to.

Agreed.

Diaw was another guy that was left out of the mix tonight, like four minutes I think. With how well Diaw has been playing of late, I was surprised to see Lyles leapfrog him on the depth chart tonight. Think we could have used a little more stretch and less packing the paint.

Maybe you're seeing something I'm not but I couldn't disagree more. I think Diaw was completely overpowered the few minutes he was in. He couldn't guard a fence post in this game. Who ever he was guarding had a free pass to the basket. I don't blame coach for playing someone else.

A very frusrating game. I am not one to buy into conspiracies, but I do believe in human nature, and human nature is inclined toward favoring certain groups or individuals over others. I do believe something akin to a 'star system' exists in the NBA (although this is ulitmately an empirical question if someone can figure out how to measure it)in which the refs favor certain players over others. For example, there is no way in hell Dante Exum gets the same treatment from the refs as, say, James Harden, where it comes to fouls called. Exum has to get absolutely punished (it seems) to go to the line, while Harden almost inevitably gets benefit of the doubt calls. It is frustrating and enfuriating to watch. Last night, Lowrey got every single benefit of the doubt foul called, while Hayward was getting pummeled and got squat. It is almost impossible to play defense against a 'star,' particularly when it's a lesser player (e.g., Mack) guarding him, when refs make repeated benefit of the doubt calls. I'm not saying the refs cost us the game last night, but they were certainly a factor. Its frustrating as hell watching a star player make endless trips to the foul line because refs seem to just assume he's fouled and decide all doubt in his favor.

On a related subject, I'm all for the last two minute report. In fact, I'd extend it to the entire game. I see no reason why refs should not be held accountable for their performance; players are, coaches are, GMs are. I don't agree with the rationale for exusing refs from similar transparency and accountability. Yes, they are human and they make mistakes, but so are and so do players, same with coaches and GMs (as well as any other job with public visibility), and that doesn't excuse them from transparencty and accountablity any more than it should excuse the refs. Lack of transparency and unaccountable is rarely a good thing, I see see nothing so compelling in this case to suggest that NBA refs merit an exception.

If you replace Favors with Millsap, we win all these type games. And we are better for the playoffs. One year of being legit with Millsap is better for me than 2 years of losses like this with Favors.

The kicker - I bet we could get a draft pick and Millsap for Favors. And we are a better, more balanced team. We would actually be contenders.

Also, I bet Favors wouldnt be too sad about going back home to ATL to play.

Thought this trade only really works for us if you feel DFAVs health is going to be an issue. If you think he will recover back to his old self you resign him. In other words a healthy Favors is more valuable than a healthy Milsap. We cant just make this trade for one year. We need to think about the next few years with every move we make now.

Games like this are painful to me.

I expected the Jazz to lose, so no shock there, but to lose when they led for like 45 straight minutes just sucks worse than say being down by 8-12 points for the whole game. It's also extra enraging that Hill isn't out there. **** you Len.

I personally think Favors will have injury issues the rest of his career. He already has a combo of back and knee problems. Most importantly, the guy has been a pro for what, 7-8 seasons? He is a solid pro, but I see no reason to think he is a franchise maker/breaker. We are better with him than without, but I don't think we have to have him to contend. We need to use him for better value.

I must have seen a different game. Lowry got same calls as Jazz players. Number of times Gobert and Favors got away with fouls on Toronto guards was the same if not more than the other way around. Bigs on bigs was also the same. JV and that Brazilian dude got called on just as many tochy fouls. What happened is Toronto were ascertive in the end and we didn't make our layups and couldn't secure rebounds. The only blatantly bad call in the end that I remember was on Ingles and non-call when Mack got hammered but **** happens - we were playing worse that the Raptors in the last 6 minutes full stop.
