What's new

Sloan is back

I love Jerry Sloan like a fat kid loves chocolate cake, but Jerry didn't sound very coherent during his interview. He stumbled on questions, talked when the question was directed at Randy Rigby, and really didn't have a clue what he was specifically going to be doing in the future. I'm all for bringing Jerry in, but, it's pretty obvious he's not the same Jerry we all know.

In a way, if true, that makes this a better fit. There won't be much of a question about Jerry stepping on Ty's toes if Jerry has lost a couple steps. But his knowledge, philosophy, credibility and reputation do have value.

Sounds like he's 100% willing to just serve as a resource and let people come to him for help and/or provide input at appropriate times and places.

I think he's preparing us for a 25-win season in which we'll see glimpses of brilliance from Kanter and Favors, but also games in which they disappear and make "rookie" mistakes. They won't have the consistency you expect from more seasoned players. Now had they both started last year...well, they'd be much further along. But that's an argument for one of the Ty threads.

I think he and the Jazz are preparing the fans for a rough season......

WHEN THEY RESIGN AL JEFFERSON.

I love Sloan, but he isn't the answer to the Jazz defensive issues... Sloan was a "defensive minded" coach, but I'm not sure the jazz have ever had an elite defense, certainly not in the modern era. I think Phil Johnson's offense was the real reason the jazz were mildly successful.

Funny, I remember Ty saying that a yearish ago he asked Sloan for help and Sloan wouldn't do it, wanting him to cut his own teeth. Sounds like Corbin decided to go over his head a bit...

Jerry Sloan

- Randy & Kevin talked to me about the job 1 year ago
- They called me again to see if I'm interested in working something out
- I'm just Happy to be Back
- I don't want conflicts & stepping on anybody's toes
- I really enjoy watching and seeing guys compete, and trying to get them to compete
- Last year: I really enjoyed watching Jazz games, even though I wasn't attached, I still was attached.
- Practices? Not if it's too early... but may be Ty will call me, get me out of bed...

- Ty did a great job last year of Coaching, keeping Guys together with FA's
- It wasn't an easy situation last year, it didn't just happen like that, it wasn't easy

- I don't think he was treated fairly by the Press
- Hopefully I can keep some of you guys off his back
- Karl Malone Hire? Karl has great knowledge, the man himself went and did all the work himself, he loved to compete, young players can learn a lot from him
- "You can lead the horse to water, but you can't make him drink"
- "If they're willing to work, then they have a chance to get better"
- People get credit for being "defensive coach" "offensive coach", JUST COACH!!

Retirement

- DWill was gonna leave, everyone knew that, it just came up... it just happened
- Favors & Kanter? They're YOUNG - but people are saying they're ALL STARS. That's unfair pressure on them. But they also have to do the work to be better. Come to practice & working hard everyday. I haven't been around them.
- "How many young players are playing in the FINALS tonight?" It takes time.
- We had pressures trading John Stockton & Karl Malone, but look at the Spurs

This job

- Biggest thing Jazz needs? You need "patience" with young guys.
- Look at OKC with Durant. He got better every year. Put a lot of work into it.
- Hayward? He's a better player now. He's had to work. It's amazing the amount of work between College & NBA. Still a lot more to be done
- (to reporter who's talking fast) "Slow down, I can't keep up with you! I'm getting old!"

Ty Corbin

- Well since we've made the change, I had lunch a few times
- I just wanted him to be around us, coach is a great man to be around
- I know the knowledge he has and loyalty to this Org. and the passion he has to SUCCEED.
- It's just FUN to have him around us
- To have him back is tremendous
- He can't hurt my feelings - if I'm screwing up, I expected him to tell me about it
- It's like a "parent" a little bit, if he sees something not going right, I trust him to tell us that and help us grow

Sloan made it sound like Corbin sought him out. If that's true maybe Ty isn't clueless about being clueless, which is a really good thing.

Wow. Do you see the illogic here? Did not Ty learn everything he does not know from Sloan? Was Sloan holding back something in those 7 years Ty was an assistant?

This is one the saddest things I have heard to come out of this franchise. They just cannot let go of the past and move on to the future. Next, they will have the team wearing John Stockton shorty shorts.

Always interesting to the different opinions and responses, some people are happy, some wonder what took so long for this to happen, some think this sucks and it's a crutch or Jazz are scared or stuck in the past. Then there are different twists and variations and conspiracies on how or why this happened or why it will or wont work.

I personally am happy and excited but at the same time don't really have any expectations on how this will work out. But will fall back to what I said in another thread it can't hurt to surround a person or organization with good basketball minds/experience.

Yes, let's make this happen!

Hey, remember how Frank Layden stuck around the Jazz a few years after he left as HC? Coach Sloan credits his success to that extra tutelage he received from Frank Layden after he became HC. You're wrong.

Let go your hate, young one...wow is right..get over it man.

On a real note however, I am glad Sloan isn't coaching another team, would have been strange. I rooted for it to work out for him, but glad it didn't now.

I think there's a HUGE jump from being an assistant to head coach. In any sport, look how many excellent assistant coaches, offensive/defensive coordinators, whatever you call them, are FANTASTIC assistants but lousy head coaches. Sloan might be able to help Ty take a step back, reassess what he needs to focus on most as a head coach. After all, Jerry went through some of the same growing pains. He failed miserably in Chicago in his first head coaching job.

Also, Sloan will likely back Ty up on everything, so look for at least another 3 years of Corbin. He already has next year, and with Sloan's support he will get the benefit of the doubt for a couple of more. Yup, sure is good to have ole Jer back.

I think Corbin is here to stay. Unless there is a misdemeanor, signs are that he'll be with the Jazz for a very very long time.
