Stephen A Smith & Jalen Rose - Mitchell is ROY

Blake Griffin won as a "red-shirt" rookie, didn't he?
I don't think it's unfair to include players who have been injured and are thus included in the next year's rookie category. If anything, while true rookies were playing in college, these others were rehabbing injuries and missing playing time.

Simmons is a great player. To argue he is undeserving because he's not the best player on the team is insane. As a Jazz fan, one could argue Donovan is helped by having other shooters and a tremendous screen setter in Gobert. Both are sometimes very inconsistent; that's what being a rookie is all about. Either choice for ROY will be great. And either choice will leave a very deserving player out in the cold.

In any other year where there is 1 clear winner, i.e., Blake, then that's fine. But in a year where there are 2 deserving players, then to me you have to look at other things like 'are you a true rookie?' To me that's ambiguous with Simmons because he got to be around an NBA team for a whole year, seeing how plays are run, watching other NBA players and learning about their tendencies, etc. Also don't you think listening in on coaching sessions wouldn't have helped him improve as a player far more than other players who at the same time were in college? How much better did Simmons got given all the things he learnt last year that Mitchell didn't?

If Simmons is considerably better then yeah give it to him. But when they are this close - you've got to give the edge to the 'true' rookie, and that's Mitchell.

But don't you think a player benefits from actually being able to play?
While Mitchell was playing for Louisville, Simmons was unable to get on the court due to a broken foot. I just don't buy the argument Simmons should be "ineligible" because he was on a team, but didn't play. If anything, the injured player might be at the disadvantage depending on the type of injury.

Now if you're going to argue that a Euro player who comes over as a "rookie" after being a stud overseas for a few years shouldn't be classified as a true rookie, I would agree with you there.

Don't get me wrong. I want Donovan to win. But both players are putting up eye-popping numbers for a rookie. It's just a shame there are two equally deserving players in the same season.

It is time for delusional Mitchell homers to have a reality check

Why Ben Simmons is still Rookie of the Year favorite over Donovan Mitchell

Buddy, as a fellow Aussie I don't quite get your agenda. Why are you trolling?
This is a Jazz fanz site - 95% of the people on here are not Australian and don't want to be lambasted with views that reflect either an Aussie homer or a fan of another team.

There are some people on here that agree (or partially agree) with you that Simmons is or should be the ROTY. But you are almost the only one I can think of that vehemently wants Simmons to get it over DM. You should be either sprooking this routine on Aussie NBA sites or Libertyballers etc.

If you are not a troll - you are tone deaf.

Ben Simmons is averaging 16.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.9 blocks.

Players who have averaged those numbers in a full season: Nobody ever.

Kirilenko 2003-4: 16.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.9 steals and 2.2 blocks, while not running the Jazz offense. Also shot 33.8% on 3s.

That was just the first player off the top of my head. Simmons is good, but he's not unprecedented.

Michael Carter-Williams averaged 16.7 ppg, 6.2 boards, 6.3 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.6 blocks. They also had about the same amount of turnovers per game at 3.5 for MCW to 3.7 for Simmons. But he was a much much better shooter than Simmons at 26% from three. Oddly he played for the same team and won ROY.

Their stats are almost identical.

Those comparisons and achievements of DM are incredibly great. Let him play out those and keep cheering him.
Future look so bright for Jazz fans after those few long years of Heywards Boozers Williams. I will only miss Millsap.
