In that same interview, earlier on, they mentioned how smart Jazz fans were, and how they realize this is the plan to win a title, and how Utah is still 13th in attendance in the NBA.

Thats a pretty sad statement about the NBA because every Jazz game looks so freaking empty.
 
Next year Jazz do not tank. They will be around 40 wins.

All your quotes are basically Rigby covering the Jazz's butts in case they are not in the playoffs next year.

Edit: Jazz pick anywhere from 10th to 16th next year.

I don't consider this an indication that the Jazz plan to tank yet again, but rather a realistic assessment of what's likely to unfold in the future. Given the history of the Jazz organization, and its aversion to anything remotely like a losing culture, I'd bet that a high lottery pick is not their goal for next year.

One way or another, we will know really quickly if they plan on tanking. If Gordon stays, they probably start to push for the playoffs. If they let Gordon walk, then they will tank another year.

Also, look at who they keep/cut. If our PG's next year are Burke, Garrett and Lucas = tank.

If Williams, Jefferson walk = tank.

Even at .500, it's almost guaranteed the Jazz don't make the playoffs.

Western Conference playoffs: From '01/02 to the present (not including the strike-shortened season), the average number of wins for the 8th seed in the WC is nearly 46. Only twice in that period have teams with 42 or 43 wins made the playoffs. Including this season (which is almost a lock to happen), the 8th seed will have won at least 47 games four times.

So yes, I agree with Rigby, we need to be patient. To expect a sudden rise from 23-25 wins to the playoffs would be extremely optimistic. Could the Jazz rise from the ashes like (the) Phoenix? Perhaps. But Utah, unless Lindsey brings in some veteran FA's, will still have a young team. In fact, next season the Jazz will have six lottery picks on the roster between the ages of 19-23 and a seventh in Hayward at the ripe old age of 25.

Of course (fingers crossed, knock on wood, rabbit's foot in hand for it NOT to happen), this same argument could be used to justify bringing Corbin back - i.e. the team is young and Ty will grow with them.

I agree that we will know fairly quickly wha they plan to do. I do not see the Hayward situation as the key. I see the key as who else they bring in (like you said). If its Lucas level players then you have a case. I think they go for better talent.

I say Hayward and Williams come back but Jefferson moves on.

I doubt the Jazz keep Garrett AND Lucas. Neto wanted to come over this season and they made him play overseas another year. Expect Raul to be on the roster. Lucas must have pics of someone; otherwise he would have never gotten a roster spot. So maybe he stays over Garrett - although I'd rather have Diante or a rookie over JLIII. For some crazy reason though, the Jazz have this philopsophy that they MUST have a veteran 2nd/3rd PG, no matter how bad he may be.

And how would letting Jefferson and Williams go equate to a tank? After a bad November, RJ has put up some decent percentages. But 10/3 in 27 mins/per shouldn't be hard to replace. Besides, he's already stated his intention of playing for a contender. He's an UFA. So he's gone.

And Williams? Nothing special. OK shooter, but not going to dominate a game. For what he does, Jazz can probably find a comparable player with the GS pick. Someone younger, with upside, who is MUCH cheaper. Or if they draft a big, then Marvin will be out of a job. He wasn't that good for Utah last season when playing SF.

But how, exactly, do the Jazz "tank" and wind up with a bottom 2-3 record? Jettison Hayward, hope their top-5 pick this season is a bust, trade Favors and Kanter for 2nd round picks?

Jazz have Favors, kanter, Evans, Gobert, Burks and Burke under contract.

I say they bring back Hayward, Williams and Garret.

Then they beef up thru free agency and bring in two 1st round picks and Neto.

Favors/Gobert
Kanter/FA or draft pick/Evans
FA or draft pick/Williams
Hayward/Burks
Burke/Neto/Garrett

Then there will be one final FA/draft pick wing. That is 13 players.

He goes on to say that he doesn't see it happening. Also another tank year would possibly mean another year or two of Corbin. I'd rather move forward with what the Jazz have done this year and have a new coach.

I think most of us agree that the Jazz will be much improved but short of the playoffs. They will be close to .500 next year.

I say maybe even up to 45 wins.
 
We're agreeing a lot, Stoked.
Certainly on talent and PT this season, Garrett stays over JLIII.
And I do think the Jazz pick up two FA's. One could be Williams; the other is likely a starting wing (unless Utah wins the lottery).
As for the picks, I think Lindsey will trade the #23 and #34 (or wherever those land) to move up and grab the player he wants in the late teens. If a trade doesn't happen, the 2nd-rounder will be another draft and stash.


In terms of the "tank," what I've been trying to say is even IF the Jazz wanted to intentionally miss the playoffs and hope for Parker, Embiid or Okafor, there's just no way to finish that low in the standings, not without doing a Philadelphia and trading away core players for future picks.
