What's new

The tank will last another year - Randy Rigby

We're agreeing a lot, Stoked.
Certainly on talent and PT this season, Garrett stays over JLIII.
And I do think the Jazz pick up two FA's. One could be Williams; the other is likely a starting wing (unless Utah wins the lottery).
As for the picks, I think Lindsey will trade the #23 and #34 (or wherever those land) to move up and grab the player he wants in the late teens. If a trade doesn't happen, the 2nd-rounder will be another draft and stash.

I would be thrilled with that.

And our most core peices are still young. Hayward will be what? 24 or 25 next year? Favors, Burke, Burks and Kanter even younger. Plus two draft picks...

If Parker and Embiid go back to school, then I'd be down to tank again. Right now the 2015 draft doesn't look very deep (from what I hear).

But I have a hard time seeing another tank happening. I think Rigby is just preparing people for the idea that we won't make the playoffs next year. Not in the West. I see us being toward the end of the lottery next year, and making the playoffs the year after that.

I agree with this.

I think we are putting too much on our future rookie. Remember, the year Cleveland drafted LeBron, he averaged 20 a night and they only won 35 games.

To think that a pick and a new coach will take us from 23 wins to 40 is a little crazy. We probably end up in the 25-35 range, depending on how the draft pick develops and the coach we bring in.

He goes on to say that he doesn't see it happening. Also another tank year would possibly mean another year or two of Corbin. I'd rather move forward with what the Jazz have done this year and have a new coach.

I think most of us agree that the Jazz will be much improved but short of the playoffs. They will be close to .500 next year.

I say maybe even up to 45 wins.

Read my post above about your 45 win prediction. It's a little too optimistic.

Also, after listening to the Rigby interview, he talked a lot about Corbin, and how Corbin tells him he doesn't know his future, but he is still working with the players because it is what is best for them and not what's best for Corbin...but not once did Rigby give Corbin a compliment, or a vote of confidence, or a hint that he will be back.

I think they go after Longabardi, who understands the whole business side, go young for real this time (no more Marvin, Jefferson, and maybe even Hayward), add a big from next year's draft, then start to build around Burke, 2014 pick and 2015 pick. That will be their big three, ala OKC.

The tank could be on next year. We know the Jazz aren't going to spend much money on free agents unless they can extend Burks and Kanter on the cheap (unlikely). That means we will have players of RJ or Marvin's level again. Along with the internal development and our pick, that doesn't add up to more than 5 more wins. If it does, then some player has emerged as all star worthy and we are all happy.

Vince Longabardi?

He was a great coach.... hall of famer.
Let it be so.
Plus green bay is a small market too so that gives me even more hope

Nice. I'm talking about Mike Longabardi, Horny's assistant. Worked with Lindsay in Houston, analytical guy, supposedly the brains behind Pheonix's defense.

I would put him at the top of my guess list for our next HC.

I want Tomic to come over.

We'll be better, but we won't be tanking. I'm predicting the 8-10 pick next year. A little better, but not really challenging for a playoff spot.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that DL uses the cap space the same way as last year by picking up some bad expiring contracts for more picks. Accumlating assets is still a viable strategy considering how young this team is. Why spend money on FA vets who'll just take time from the youngsters? And whoever the coach is, they'll still have to focus on developing young talent. Another bad season with youth and little depth could yield a(nother) difference maker in the draft, but then you have to start winning at some point so it doesn't become David Kahn and the Timberwolves.

Next year Jazz do not tank. They will be around 40 wins.

All your quotes are basically Rigby covering the Jazz's butts in case they are not in the playoffs next year.

Edit: Jazz pick anywhere from 10th to 16th next year.

It is very likely the Jazz miss the playoffs next year. Despite what many jazz think, there is no savior in this draft. Parker, Wiggins, Embiid, Randle or Exum are not Lebron type players. The Jazz are a VERY young team and there may be a small chance Hayward doesn't come back. Besides the Jazz are in the Western Conference and there are a lot of teams to climb over. If the Jazz end up with say 26 wins this year they are not going to jump to 44 wins and make the play offs unless they get a stud FA and their draft picks are better than expected.

NBA teams like the Jazz do not improve 22 games in one year. You are being overly optimistic. I hope that the Jazz only bring back Hayward and perhaps Diante. Bringing back Marvin would be a big mistake especially if the Jazz draft a PF or a Center. I do not want Favors or Kanter to lose minutes to Wiliams. I wouldn't bring in FA next year because the Jazz are still going to suck next year.

Great post. I think there is a lot of what will happen in this.

I still think Burke, plus top 5 2014 pick, plus top 5 2015 pick is our future.

Very possible based on how DL still has a long leash and ownership is letting him be cold and calculating in his approach to building a contender. The next coach may have a longer leash as well, so he can be better equipped to develop talent without trying to win at the expense of benching the youth. We'll see how it plays out this summer with the way the cap space is used.

I don't think DL even knows what we are doing yet. I imagine he has multiple paths laid out and depending on how draft night goes he will take the appropriate path. Too many ifs are in play to speculate on next years wins.
