What's new

Utah Jazz v Toronto Raptors Oct 2 2018 Preseason Game Thread

Is it just me or were there a ton of alley-oops in this game. The highlight reels were full of them. It made it look like we might have added a new play up the middle, or tweeked a slip screen play, that might result in more lobs to the big guys. This would make a lot of sense and help keeping our big guys on the floor make it so that we can negate somewhat the small ball systems.

It wasn’t just you. I cannot remember the source but it’s been mentioned. Probably through twitter.

EXUM 21
ROYCE 19

THABO 8

Udoh and Burks are useful pieces, could be used at certain spots. Neto is a good third option.
Graywolf needs minutes, and so do Bradley and Niang but they'll likely play in blowouts only.

Have to feel good about Rubio hitting open shots - there's always the sinking feeling that his "turnaround" last year was a bit of a fluke or just a hot streak.

Opposing teams are going to be terrified to play the Jazz this season.

For one they are actually going to have to scout Ingles, who chances are they are already traumatized from his roo trash talk. They are already intimidated by Gobert. At least DM45 isn't rookie so they won't be as shamed when they get posterized.

Then you half a dozen guys they don't know the name of but damn do they play D. It has to hurt. Then the crowd if it's a home game, they are going to call in sick. Injury bug will be our friend this year.

I say it's coming down to the rockets vs the jazz again to get a chance at Golden state. Hopefully by that time Cousins and Draymond are fighting over who gets to play shooting guard.

He shot it smoothly without hesitation, which was more important than it going in.

His shot is still goofy, but I think last year he shot because he was supposed to... I think he is shooting because he thinks it will go in and knows his coach and teammates believe in him.

He had a couple WTF turnovers, but everyone was off and I think it will take a bit to get the rhythm down.

He really does get like every loose ball... I will Favs had his ability to vacuum up every ball that comes in his vicinity.

Every time I watch the Raptors I'm impressed with Jonas' offensive game. He is underrated. Good post game and can get to his spot with the ball from the perimeter. Struggles on defense, but he always gives us trouble.

That's what I thought too but after these first two preseason games I'm beginning to think almost all of Royce's minutes are going to come from backing up Ingles at the 3, and the bulk of Exum's minutes will be at PG. I think either Burks or Allen will be in the rotation, I'm just not sure which one.

Yes, but the starters aren't playing starter minutes and Joe missed game one and Dante missed game 2.

I think that Royce gets his minutes at the forward spots (I still believe he can play the 4 and be a stretch playmaking 4 if needed) and some at the wing. Dante gets minutes at the wing and PG. Jae and Thabo take all the non-favs 4 minutes, but Royce, Jae, Ingles, Thabo are all kind of interchangeable. I think there is 8-10 minutes for Grayson or AB. Watching first half last night I though AB was way better than Allen but second half it reversed. Allen's defense was pretty rough at points last night... but if those guys are roughly equal I think the nod will go to Grayson to help him develop.

One ankle sprain or knee tweak and they are both in the rotation.

He's done it 2 years in a row now, so I wouldn't call last year a fluke. I think he turned the corner in his career the 2nd half of his last season in Minny. Last year he was in a new system with all new teammates, so his slow start was understandable. Either way, he's played solid for 1 year out of the last year and a half.

Burks is going to get DNP'd again if everyone is healthy. After last year, he really just seems like injury insurance for Quin. Allen will probably get a chance to earn minutes, but he'll likely have a short leash with a lack of minutes to go around.

Rubio's shot abysmal through January last year - sub 40% from the field/sub 30% from 3. You can't attribute missing wide open shots at that clip to being in a new system.

I'm leaning towards "not a fluke" either but we'll see.

Do the jazz always commit more turnovers because they pass more and usually play a more sophisticated offense?

It seemed most of last night's TOs were from unforced errors: players shuffling their feet. Nothing sophisticated about that.

Quick whistle last night too, couple offensive fouls, some sloppy footwork... but also so ill advised passes. Royce had an unfortunate dribble after a steal, DM dribbled off his foot... it was just not well put together. I'm not really concerned at all.

I know last year we were relatively turnover prone, but I think we can chalk a lot of that up to handing a ton of our possessions over to a rookie, as well as new guys learning the system. I expect this year's TO numbers to look a lot better.
