Utah vs. #15 Pitt

I'm number one a Utah fan and also like byu, but my goodness I hate byu fans. Utah barely wins the the game they practically tried to give to a top 15 team but still managed to win and dominate the game. The Utah defense was a lot better than I expected especially against the run.

While I thought Utah would be decent against the run last night, I had no idea they'd be that stellar all along the Front 7. It was an amazing effort. The only major defensive problem I saw last night was the two young Safties getting their coverages right in the 4th Qtr. They had a few missed calls and it led to some quick points for Pitt. While that does trouble me a little, I assume it will only get better from here on out.

And as far as individual play, I thought Brian Blechen showed he is the real deal. I've been hearing Weddle comparisons coming out of Utah camp and I was a bit skeptical but I think he showed last night that he is going to be a staple in this Ute defense for years to come. His run support was amazing and he made the biggest defensive play of the night. Not bad for a true freshman starting his 1st game. Once he and Taplin-Ross tighten up those coverage problems I think we're going to see one of the best Safety combos in Ute history.

I would think that's fair but with the opponents they have coming up in the next 5 or 6 weeks, the only way they'll continue to move up is when teams in front of them lose.

The last 2 posts in this thread proves that as much as they'd like to deny it, BYU fans are obviously very wrapped up in what Utah is doing.

Not only am I a BYU fan, but I'm also a degenerate gambler so my obsession with Utah goes even further. At least I got my money back last night. What kind of team can't even cover the spread?

I'll bet neither of those teams I saw last night will be ranked at the end of the season.

Question for Ute fans: Did you want to strangle Whittingtool after 'icing' the missed kick? I don't know about you guys, but I think that is one of the most bush league 'plays' in football -- and he did it TWICE. What a butt ****.

Admit it, you guys should have probably lost, and Pitt had NO reason to be ranked in the top 50, let alone 15th. Quit thumping your balls like you just beat up one of the best teams in the nation, you didn't. You barely eeked one out at home. Some intellectual honesty would be nice.

More than likely Washington and Pitt will have similar years. Pitt's quarterback is brand new - that was his first start. It's one thing to be USC or Florida and still be ranked with a new QB coming in but Pitt's only got 4 or 5 really talented guys so you probably could have called BS on their ranking just based on that.

Washinton's QB is supposedly the best QB in the nation and his a Senior. If any year is Washington's year, this would have to be it.

No, I didn't want to strangle him because I knew he was going to do it. I watched him stand next to the ref and signal for it. I also thought he was going to do it a third time. Do the rules permit it? Yes. Is it bush league? If you say so.

I was there (didn't have the luxury of TV commentary) so it took it a few seconds to figure out what happened each time. We Lost!, wait... no... We won! Hang on, still no. Oh for cripesakes! I didn't like it either. Ice the kicker once, fine. But I am not a fan of the multiple last-second timeouts.

I'm not sure who you think is thumping their balls (that would hurt), but to me, most Ute fans seem to be having roughly the same reaction: Ugly, yes, but a win. We will need to improve in several areas as the season progresses. I don't remember anyone declaring Ute supremacy or predicting a Nat'l Championship.

Some intellectual honesty would be nice.

I'll give it a shot (let me know how I do):

-As far as Pitt and their #15 ranking: For the most part I think pre season rankings are complete and utter garbage and should be done away with all together. With that being said, I think Pitt has some freakish atheletes on their team, I expect them to compete for the Big East title and I wouldn't be suprised to see them in a semi-decent bowl game. What does that translate to in regards to end of season rankings? Your guess is as good as mine I would suppose.

-One thing we do know for certain about Pitt: Their RB is a beast and Utah's front 7 shut him completely down. I don't see how even the most bitter BYU fan can spin that. Utah's run D is the truth.

-I don't know if Utah should have "probably" lost, but I would certainly say that they easily could have. However, just about everything that went against Utah was self-inflicted mental mistakes. Had they lost, they would have had nobody to blame but themselves. When Utah was not self-destructing, they clearly outplayed Pitt.

-I think what Whitt did with the "icing" situation was silly but I think most haters are trying to overblow it. Even Whitt admitted afterwords that it was a pretty silly thing to do. I really wouldn't worry about trying to make it a big issue because in reality, it's not.

So in summary, here's my "intellectually honest" opinion of my team after their 1st game:

Even amidst Utah's sef destruction, I saw a lot of things I was happy about that quite frankly were question marks before the game started. Most notably, Utahs' WR and LB's really stepped up. Overall, I think the Front 7 is going to be devestating all season long. I think overall Utah has a the chance to be a very good team in 2010 and that makes me pretty damned happy considering their relative youth.

I will reply to part. No we should not have lost. Without some 1st game jitters by the Utes that game is a blow out. Utah completely dominated the game and only the mistakes even gave Pitt a shot.

When did Versus start doing that campus cam thing? Now that's more annoying than Whit's timeouts. If I wanted a couple of rotund Pittsburgh coeds bouncing around on my TV screen every few minutes during the game, I would pop in a Girl's Gone Wild DVD.
