Hate to say it, but this is one of the dumbest threads ever.
You do not let everyone of your free agents walk. No team does that. It shows a total lack of caring and a risk of being the worst team ever which even you tanking fans cannot be rooting for because the recovery process will take forever especially for a small maket team like the Jazz. Another thing is I don't understand everyone's interest in the draft and summer league. You need vets are your team in order to win which should be the Jazz main focus next offseason.
I came close to negging you. Say no to batman!Umm, we need some good threads started around here. This thread is crap. More batman!
Yes please... A swift response to this would be welcomed. So please tell us, bkralj, which of the free agents you would have brought back, your reasons for doing so and how much money you would have offered. Please also elaborate on how this would fit in with the plan to start the young core and give them more minutes.
Perhaps. But Utah may not have much room for FA's. I actually predict Lindsey will take on $15M-$20M of junk expirings for one more season in exchange for more assets. With the current core5 + a lottery pick + perhaps GS' pick (if we don't combine it with our own to move up) + Neto? + Gobert + perhaps an early 2nd rounder (maybe draft and stash?)...that's already 8-10 rotation players on the roster. Maybe a stretch-4 and a veteran #3 PG in free agency. Other than that, Jazz will be pretty set on having a fantastic group of youngsters to continue to develop and evaluate. Free agents only if one or more of the youngsters doesn't show sufficient potential.
Right. But each year we have an additional 1st round pick and perhaps will bring over a player we have "drafted and stashed." Like Neto next year, whoever we get in the 2014 draft with our high 2nd-rounder the year after, etc. Not saying the Jazz never bring over a FA. And some of the youth could be moved to bring in a starter or 6th man type. OKC traded Green, for example. I think trades are much more likely to bring in impact players than via free agency. Free agents are usually overpaid, at least the really good ones. Lindsey is more of a bargain shopper. He'll likely wait until late-July, early August when solid vets are still looking for homes to fill out any holes in the roster each year. The problem that I see is that is that is 9 young guys. You figer may 3 will be traded, bust or something else. Not all of these guys are going to pan out or fit into Utah's future plans. That will free up some room for some FAs down the road.
Say Burks, Gobert and the GS 2014 pick move on or Bust (picked at random) Suddenly we are at 6 guys not 9. Whole different ball game then.

I used your figures that factor in Neto and the 2 picks next year. My point being is that is highly unlikely that everyone pans out and stays with the team. So when I say six (in my example) it would be Burke, Neto, Hayward, Favors, Kanter and 1 pick next year. That ocunts everyone that would be under contract with us next year (excluding a 2nd round pick). I think the base of our team is assured. I do think there will be a little more room than you are expecting.
I can also see Lindsey turning a couple assets into a big name player. I think Lindsey will continue to look for bold, aggressive moves. He will continue to surprise us.
Are you serious? "Caring" is a two-way street, if Big Al really "cared" to stay on the team he would have put more effort into his defense. If Millsap really "cared" he would have gladly taken the role as a 6th man instead of insisting on being a starter. If Mo really "cared" he would have accepted his role as a mentor to Trey Burke and come off the bench instead of insisting on being a starter. Who gives a **** about "caring", this is a business, the players are making 7 to 8 figures, that's all the caring they need...You do not let everyone of your free agents walk. No team does that. I see your point. There are really two directions to go next season:
1. Since the Jazz only have Favors and Hayward to re-sign, Utah could go after a "pretty big-name" FA (obviously a true "big-name" FA like Kobe or LeBron isn't coming to Utah). Or even trade for one at the deadline using the expiring contracts of Jefferson, Biedrins or Williams. Jazz could remain below the salary cap for the next 3-4 years even after signing Hayward, Favors and Kanter. Perhaps Burks becomes a casualty under this scenario.
2. Lindsey uses cap space (less money set aside for Favors and Hayward) to do another GS deal, picking up $15-$20M in junk players with 1-yr left on their contracts along with a few more 1st/2nd round picks. I could see this scenario easily playing out with teams dumping dollars to pursue the 2014 free agents.
The danger of pursuing the first option via a deadline trade is it makes the Jazz a much better team. And that might drop the Jazz several spots down in the draft (unless the Jazz find an injured player like GS did with Bogut).
If I were a gambling man, I'd bet on Lindsey using the 2nd option again, letting the youngsters PLUS the 2014 draft pick(s) have another year together before Dennis looks at bringing another rotation player in.
