What will Dante Exum Be When All is Said and Done?

I have been thinking a lot about Exum lately. Though I am excited to see what Lyles does next year, Exum is probably what excites me most about the next Jazz season. But when I think about it, there is not a lot of justification I should be super excited about Exum.

There is a little bit: He was an awesome defender especially for a 19 year old, and he has elite level quickness which can't be understated, though it is not really talked about. He finished his agility testing with scores superior or just on par with The scores of Westbrook, Wall, and Rose. I don't think enough people know that. He's a great athlete, he's just not an explosive jumper.

Anyway, there were quite a few red flags his rookie year. He shot like 34% from the field . And He avoided contact as though it were Thee Jazz Fan. I think when Exum came into the league, Jazzfanz were hoping against hope he'd show many flashes of being a guy that scores, gets to the line, scores a lot. We kind of got the opposite, but the silver lining in all that was he was a far superior defender than anyone really anticipated.

I'm curious to hear what you think as of today. How good is Exum gonna be? Tier 1 star? Top 15 PG. role player on a title contender? What do ya'll think?

Honestly, his best comp is Ricky Rubio. Rubio is a really good player. I would be happy with that.

I think he's physically superior to both of those guys. Next year my expectations are tempered coming off of the ACL, but 2017-2018, I have very high hopes for him.

As a rookie, he was incredibly raw and played timid, but I think if he can fight his nature and become more assertive/aggressive I think he can eventually become a 16ppg, 7apg, 5rpg type player who plays elite perimeter defense.

Overall I remain very excited about him.

So you're thinking Rondo? I think that's a fair ceiling but I'm not too confident he will hit it.

That's a decent call. Maybe a taller, less of a playmaker, better shooting version of Rondo. Hopefully without the gay slurs and baggage.

I am trying to keep my hopes reasonable as coming off of an ACL and being so young could make this next season another rookie year so to speak. Longterm I am hoping he becomes the best defensive PG in the league and a reliable playmaker that can score 16-18 points a game

Word is that the organization thinks he is going to be john wall with elite defense.

I think he is the Australian Kobe. J/k.

I think his probable production will be about 16-18 ppg, 6-8 apg, 4-5 rpg and elite defense.

That's good enough to make the team a contender if all else remains similar.

John wall with elite defense is an mvp candidate. Wall is what, the second best player in the east? I hope Dante ends up being that good. We would be great.

Young Penny Hardaway, less of a scorer, less athletic but more of a floor general.. I think he'll be a markedly better 3pt shooter too

Excatly what has he shown in a game that makes you think this? Penny before the injuries was on his way to being a great player....Sure the highlight films might look similar but ever see the way Penny controlled a game, Which is point guards game.. Penny came in as PG and Exum a combo guard.. Bad comparison imo.

I agree to a point, however Penny is more cerebral scorer from any position on the court pull-ups spot ups post fadeaways. Don't underestimate Exum's athletic ability. He will use his speed like Harris to get to the rim and the ft line, and he's like Kidd in that he's basically a pure pg that looks for spot up oppertunities and uses his length to play great defense and see and pass over the defense.
