What's The Last Movie You’ve Seen?

I really liked it although I needed a second viewing to fully absorb it. One of those movies that sticks with you. I want to watch it again. Listening to the soundtrack right now.
I want to watch it, but I just haven't been in the right mood for it.

I saw Blood Father with Mel Gibson recently. It was a very basic storyline. No real twists. But I enjoyed it and hope it leads to a Mel Gibson revival in the movies. He's a great actor.

Yeah that was a great movie.

I doubt Gibson gets a revival though. He probably going to just keep doing indie flicks.

His newest film, Hacksaw Ridge, is already getting attention as Oscar worthy.

I saw the trailer for this recently and found it funny that it read "From the director of Braveheart, never mentioning Gibson himself, his name so taboo I suppose.

OK just saw this.

Wow, ... where do I start.

So let's get something out of the way first. Elle Fanning was faultless and fabulous.

Now, Nicholas Winding Refn. As I'd said before, I loved 'Drive'. Easily top 10 on my most favourite movies of all time list. But then I watched 'Only God Forgives', and I wasn't so keen on it. It was filmed in Bangkok, and yes I know the city well, like the back of my hand in fact, and honestly the city probably had never been filmed so beautifully, but apart from that everything else about the movie was just ****. So I quietly hoped 'Only God Forgives' was only a blip on NWR's path to greater things instead of an ongoing trend.

Well, in 'The Neon Demon', unfortunately, we got a lot more of 'Only God Forgives' than 'Drive'. It was, again, beautifully shot, and the music was again top notch. NWR had always done those very well and he had continued that here. But unfortunately the story was too weak for me for a 2 hour feature. It never really took off and it never went anywhere. Moreover we never really got to know any of the characters in depth neither, very poorly developed in my view and when we got to the climax it was a bit 'meh'. The ending scene with the rolling credit which could have been cut out and used as Sia's new MV didn't help neither, indicative of the 'style over substance' theme that ran throughout the movie.

I kept thinking, 'May be I'm expecting too much?', but with such a dream premise/story/set-up, and NWR's visual talent and taste, I just think it could have been done WAYY WAYY better and that's a real shame.

It gets a 6.5/10 for me.

Star Trek Beyond...

I was really enjoying this movie until it became another "sins of our fathers" piece of crap. I turned it off as soon as that plot line was revealed. Basically nothing more than Kahn 2.0

So you didn't take away any deeper meanings from the movie?

I wouldn't say his movies are "style over substance" but that the style is the substance.

I am aware that it has deep meanings, I am definitely not denying that. I'm just saying for a 2 hour feature, the themes haven't been developed as well as I would have liked. The characters for examples, we know almost nothing about each of them. The main character (Jesse), we know a little bit about, but the make up artist (a major character), we know almost nothing about her background, what makes her who she is, etc. The same goes with Jesse's photographer friend, or the inn keeper. Because of that it becomes very hard to relate to these 'mannequin' characters and even harder to really get in and understand what their actions mean and what themes the director is trying to explore through these characters.

Thin Blue Line

I know this is old, but I had just seen it and OH MY GOD IT IS EASILY ONE OF THE BEST DOCUMENTARY I HAD EVER SEEN.

A must watch.

Suicide Squad. I liked the movie but the new Joker sucks. The actor is trying too hard to be over the top crazy.

Hunt for The Wilderpeople was cool. Loved everything I saw from Taika Waititi.

Watched The Purge: Election Year. Entertaining but there was some pretty awful acting in it
I liked it better than I thought I would. Which isn't saying much.
