Who should be our starting SF?

didn't ty corbin tried millsap at 3? He did, and it was not a good experiment at all. millsap is certianly a PF and he has not got the ball handling and quickness to play at 3, but i am so pleased that he improved his range significantly.

It's not just defense. How does Sap's skillset translate to playing offense as a wing? He definitely can't drive from the perimeter. I can't even fathom he could become a good shooter off screens. He excels in the pick and pop and screen and roll, but he won't get much opportunity for that as a wing. So he's not going to be a difficult cover. When the ball gets swung to him outside you can safely play up on him. And even an average NBA 3 is going to have a solid quickness advantage on him which means he's going to take a lot more contested jumpers when they close on his shots.

So you invert your offense. Millsap can post every small forward in the league but Lebron. Favors and Kanter have capable jumpers. Jefferson's jumper is decent. This works even better if Memo can give us 10-15 minutes a night. Defensively you probably have to play some zone then. Which isn't a problem as Dallas showed this year if it is a good zone.

LA runs a different offense then the Jazz and ironically enough Millsap @ SF matches up well with LA's SF's (not named Odom), and if OKC started Millsap at 3 I would be ecstatic because it means Durant is no longer their starting SF.

But I do get the premise at playing your best players and not so much pigeon holing them into a position but I also wanted to bring up something you keep stating as fact that is bugging me. Last year AK matched up on Durant better then any other Jazz player and actually held him under his season avg's and if I remember hearing correctly one of the lowest in the entire league. But yes Lebron is pretty rough on him as his strength and quickness and low center are a tough for him and he does pretty well against Carmello despite him getting away with several of his driving/spinning elbow hooks every time they match up.
 
Interesting that the OP doesn't list CJ Miles, who is definitely the odds-on favorite to start as of now (that is, since he's just survived draft-day trading).

I think you'll see Millsap at the 3, but not as a starter (I'm happy to be wrong here, if the FO thinks this is viable). I've learned that it's bad science to bet against Paul.

If AK is re-signed, then I'd probably start him.

EDIT: I don't think anybody would be surprised if next year's starting SF isn't currently on the team. Granger?

Seriously? You'd rather start a guy that absolutely cannot play the 3 for the best SF we've had in the last 20+ years? Even WITH the contract and injuries, this is laughable at best. Ever heard of free agency? Did you also know that we have a more than capable (albeit young, and still learning) player on the bench that can play BOTH wing positions in Hayward? Sure, Sap can hit some jumpers, but he's nowhere near a consistent shot from 3 and once he doesn't have the luxury of drawing being guarded by post players and actually has to face perimeter defenders on a play to play basis, he's going to just as much of a liability as AK (shotwise) from the outside. I love Paul, but by putting him at the SF position, you're taking away his strengths and effectiveness on offense and putting him in a no-win position on defense, which is neither productive for himself or the team. I'll GLADLY take Hayward, CJ, and Burks playing the wing positions over Sap until we decide who the long term solution is there.

Yeah. Of course the top SF's are going to be able to score on Sap. They can score on anyone and it takes team defense to stop them. The problem with having a bad defender (at any position) is that they make the OK players look better.
 
Also, I think we would have to throw in a future 1st round pick to get Granger with just Millsap, like a 2013 1st rounder. We could probably swing Granger for Jefferson straight up, but I don't the Jazz would do that. With Okur's questionable health that would only give us 1 center in the form of Kanter.

I would rather do Al, but that is only if Millsap will not agree to come off the bench. If Millsap says no to the 6th man role then he should go because Al could get something else down the road if he doesn't fit with the team.
 
Probably Millsap, even though I like him way better than Jefferson. Jefferson can play center which is a nice luxury. Without him Kanter would be forced to start, with only Fess backing him up (assuming Okur isn't healthy).
