Why did Jerry pull out of the Bobcats coaching job?

How about when a top 5 coach in the business wants to be your coach, and you delay on making him your coach you lose out.

This is kind of how I viewed it. Jerry would never ask for, or expect, any preferential treatment. But the guy is a hall of famer (and deservedly so), and this is the freaking Bobcats we're talking about. I could see if you're the Lakers or the Celtics why you'd take your time even with a hall of famer wanting to come there. However, if your the Bobcats, you can interview a hall of famer along with other candidates, but you probably shouldn't string a Jerry Sloan along.

If I were Jordan this is how my interview would've went down.

Jordan: this is how we want to run the team.................. How do you feel about this direction?

Sloan: sounds good to me

Jordan: when can you start?

This guy was'nt even mentioned as a finalist, was he? I thought Brian Shaw was the strongest candidate of whoever was left. If this move doesnt pan out, you'll have to wonder how come a guy like MJ who was so smart on the court can be so dumb off of it? Maybe he is a closet sado-masochist

that's not even garage band level stuff right there.

Well Spolestra was at that level too few years back. Maybe Bobcats see a young teacher in him who has the patience to put up with the roster and teach these guys. We'll have to wait and see. But if this doesnt pan out or if this was just a cheapo move to save money then MJ has to be bi-polar

A young teacher? He's 54. This is a terrible hire. And that's putting it mildly.

I read the bolded part several times thinking it said: But the guy is a hell of a farmer... Which, with all the tractors might just be true, but it still didn't seem to make sense.

It is curious it came down to 3 guys, but after Sloan backed out, NEITHER of the remaining candidates were wanted. Or, quite possibly Jerry was rejected and Jordan gave him the option to publicly withdraw, as 'Mellow' suggested. Or MJ & co had already rejected the other two BEFORE Sloan pulled out.
Only reason I can think of for Sloan to actually pull out is he wanted more control over personnel.
As for Dunlap; read down a ways to what George Karl had to say about him...

Was just at hoopshype.com looks like Shaw passed on The Bobcats like Sloan did. I forget the guys name but it's sounding more and more like Jordan didn't want this guy, but got stuck with him because he delayed making a hire. Will he ever learn?

No. He might get fed up someday and just hire a real GM but he's never going to be any good running a team.

I'd be willing to bet these guys were told they might have to deal with a few more years of tanking. It takes a special "Mark Jackson" type of coach to accept that kind of job. Several years of looking terrible, and then just when things start looking up because they finally have a decent team, they get replaced with someone better.
