Why settle? Tonight’s draft-buy picks/move up

Not as a matter of course, but a team's owner could be a nickle-and-diming a-hole on a whim and want that $$$. Could happen I think as I don't think there was any rules changes to that.

K... do you think teams have tried this during the last 5 years? If so, why hasn’t it happened? It’s a terrible look and fan bases generally hate selling any pick... let alone a first.

You could attach the pick to a bad salary and save more and reduce your cap... the Milwaukee trade from yesterday saved them 14M... much more than the maximum of $5M that a team can offer for a pick.

Honestly getting a pick in the 30s for the 5M is a better value than paying the premium for a late first.

Yep. There is no reason why we don't buy a 2nd rounder this year. Miami just bought a pick for pretty much $1.8 million. We gotta get 1.

Every year several teams in the 30s sell them... we have done it in the past because no roster spots... that should not be an excuse this year... use the full amount for #34 and get one of the guys you would have got at 23 and I’d be over the moon happy with the trade and draft we put together.

I never said it happens regularly or even occasionally. But it can happen if an owner decides he needs a new Lambo. It's rare but it HAS happened, and could happen again.

The 30's is really the sweet spot for these types of things, once you get past 40 in a draft it's really rare to find NBA talent. Here's hoping we pull the trigger on a deal.

Atlanta sold 41 to GS for a second and 1.25M

Future 2nd. Atlanta has something like six picks in this draft (3 1sts, 3 2nds). They're weren't going to use them all. Nothing wrong with a bit of cash for something you aren't using and could defer.

My point is why didn't we try to trade for that pick.

I'm assuming we want to see who's around first. I guess it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to trade up now since the guy(s) we want could ne dup being drafted prior to that pick.

That’s been another issue... they hunt just “their guy” if that guy isn’t there they tend to move on. I’m guessing Paschall would be that guy... if he’s available in the 30s I think we really push for him.

I think if Windler is there, he’d be another guy we’d have to try to move up to get. His size/shooting is extremely tough to come by.

I can agree with being strategic to get the guy you want. But Utah has a general need for depth, a player in the mid-30s is one that is pretty much first round talent that slipped through. That's appealing from a contractual standpoint because they are a.) cheap, b.) cost controlled, and c.) can be non-guaranteed. Utah needs to get calling.

TL;DR: Yup.

Part of the reason for the love of 2nd round picks is that the contracts are non-guaranteed and if a team is in a salary cap pickle the first round pick can cost a lot regarding the salary cap and luxury tax. Also take a look at the number of first round picks toiling in the GLeague like RJ Hunter, Rashad Vaughn whose drafting team realized they made a mistake. Same type of player is probably there in the early 2nd round as late first.
