What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I don't think adding Russell means we have to lose Favors.

If Korver retires and we waive/stretch him, we have around $39 million. Russell, if we gave him a full max, would cost $27.

So we could still bring Favors back at around $12 million. He might get more on the open market for a one year deal, but I think we could give him 3 years guaranteed $30-35 million which should beat any other offer. If he walks away from an offer like that, then so be it. We can always say we tried.

Omg stahp with the he will come back for cheap if we waive him. If we waive him he gone. So keep him at 18M or move on.

Not if it's Russell. Cause what will happen is Russell and Donovan will shoot 90% of the time. And the rest of the team will be standing around. Look anyone can shoot 100 times and miss. U honestly think they'll be efficient? Um no they ain't curry KD or Thompson. The problem is the amount of shots and bad shots they take and miss by the way. The problem is they both think they're top 10 players that can shoot when they want
First, you are overstating your case, sure it may be rough the first year seeing as DM Russ and Ingles need the ball, but just like LBJ and Wade, DM and Russ would figure it out which would help both DM and Russ be more efficient as you can’t just key on one guy.
I hate being a pessimist. One of my worst traits. But I just dont think we have a chance in signing anyone big for the simple fact that we are in Utah. There is a big stigma in this state. And what happened to Westbrook here this year is the icing on the cake. Sucks to realize and admit, but we have to build from the draft and or trades it's the only way we become a contender imho

If anything... that whole situation probably got a lot better. Players around the league saw just how first class this org, and owner is. Players around the league saw just how far ownership will go to protect its players, and players of other teams. Gail Miller set a hard line for fan conduct, fans know if they act like assholes, that’s the last time they have the privilege of stepping foot into the arena. The Organization did a lot to change perception of the culture in Utah.

I could say the exact same thing about you predicting he will definitely sign elsewhere if we waive him.

Neither of us know.

If a team waives a player, that player cannot resign with that same team for one calendar year. That said, I believe that if the Jazz decline his option, he is waived per terms of the CBA. So once said it player is gone, they are gone.

Remind me, do you believe we should play Favors as strictly a backup 5, or do you want him to make the Jazz a worse basketball team?

Either seems like a bad use of $12 million or $18 million.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure we can waive him then re-sign him due to the nature of the deal he is on. Its a nonguaranteed contract and he is a long tenured player.

If we had a PG who is a real threat from 3, I think Favors starts at PF. Favors would play 20-25 mpg. Half of those minutes are when Gobert sits.

Favors is extremely valuable come playoff time. When Gobert is in foul trouble or ineffective in certain matchups, we will want and need his versatility.

I think Gobert being rendered ineffective has been overblown, and I believe Favors coming in to give us a better offensive look is magnified by the fact that our offensive firepower is absolute crap. Fix that and you don't pick up the latter by default.

You make good points. I just feel that Favors is such an asset both on and off the court. He is incredible insurance for Gobert and he can still play a huge role at PF depending on the matchup.

If he leaves, we can be okay. If we have the money to keep him, I would rather have him over a guy like Mirotic or similar.

If we waive favors I’d be willing to bet large sums of money he doesn’t sign back with us.

You’re right. Neither of you “know”. But not all predictions are equally likely. It is far, far more likely that Favors leaves if we waive him.

I agree with that. I do agree that it is very likely that Favors moves on if we waive him. My point is that it's not impossible to bring him back after waiving him. It all comes down to how much we can give him and how much he wants to be here.

Who else could we sign to start at PF or be our sixth man (assuming Crowder starts) for $12 million per year if we get Russell? Are we back to looking at Niko, Jabari, etc at that point?

If we lose Favors because of Russell, we have the following guys who can play some minutes at PF:

Crowder
O'Neale
Ingles
Niang

There are a bunch of guys we are looking at in the draft who could also play some PF.

I don't think we have to spend too much to make sure we have adequate PF coverage. Maybe somebody like Ed Davis, Vonleh, Taj Gibson or even Jerekbo. We could try to get Jabari, but I don't know if we could afford him AND Russell.

Has this been posted already?

Would've probably been a terrible trade tbh

I'm guessing it was not Rubio/Crowder for Dragic straight up... I'm also guessing it may have been discussed but doubt it was ever close.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday being talked about in a Miami article. That trade would have been awful. Now if had been Rubio and Thabo or Rubio and Udoh, I could see the value. Utah would have upgraded the PG position and Miami would have shed Dragic's money for 2019-20.

I'm really glad that trade didn't go down.
