Official UofU homer thread

I really don't like the "Whitt has been holding stuff back" argument. First of all, Michigan and USU were dogfights early on. While Utah never lost control at any point during those two games, they were so close that if Whitt was willing to gamble on hiding half his playbook, he's a lunatic. The other problem I have with it is that if we're holding back on a more wide open offense, we've officially gone 25% of the season without showing it. Who's to say you can hide a good portion of your playbook and then suddenly run it with precision 4 games in?

I'm going to go on record right now and just say that I don't think we're a good offensive football team. That's not to say we can't improve, or even win games, but I'm just not buying all the reasons I'm hearing right now.

Whitt is offensively very conservative. By nature he wants to solve problems with defense. This drives me crazy, but it's the way he is, so it would not surprise me at all if he has restricted the playbook even though the team has been in tight spots. The only thing that would have made him take more risks offensively than his initial game plan is if we had fallen behind in the fourth quarter.

Compare this year vs the first three games from last year, not the whole season.

I remember green taking about Wilson being the best qb in the nation early last year before they started conference play.

The schedule is getting more difficult starting this week

The first 3 games of last year our offense looked worse than it did by the end of the season. It looked bad early in the year against an inferior Michigan. The second half of the season is when our offense started to finally show some life.

Looking at just Michigan. Last year Utah converted 13 first downs this season we converted 20. I don't know where to find yards per drive but Utah held possession for 3 minutes longer this year than last and had 70 more yards.

Utah's offense isn't where we would like it to be but it has improved.

Do you think Michigan is better or worse this year than last?

That's a thing of beauty. Booker and Covey have huge games. Oregon's rush defense gave up 198 rushing yards to MSU and they have issues with their pass defense in space with underneath routes.

Wilson's strength is hitting the TE's and short throws and Covey is a hard, shifty little target to bring down. Toss in a Booker run game and pass game out of the back field...

Going to be a fun game.

I say Oregon covers the -11.....just don't think you guys are equipped to play a shootout game, but if your D steps up, gets a couple TOs/3 and outs early, and you give them a frequent dose of Booker and control the clock, it could be a game.

Edit: I'm looking at tape of this Oregon backup QB Jeff Lockie.....and he is awkward as hell. I don't like what I see. If Adams' finger is problematic.....the game has to be considered a toss up....slight Oregon lean since they are at home.

I don't think it will be a shoot out. Whittingham has shown that he can contain Oregon for 3 quarters. Last year, despite the Clay fumble, the real story was that our D was spent after 3. I don't think that will be the case this year because:

1) I'm more confident in our depth in the secondary than I've been the last few years
2) I think Utah's offense will have better control over the pace of the game. Utah will hold possession for longer and give our D a chance to catch their breath.

There's a chance Oregon turns it into a shootout in the 4th but I'm not seein it. Maybe it's just my homerism speakin but I think Utah wins this game with a late field goal.

Them Ute fans are optimistic. All week I have been hearing claims that you will probably win. Oregon is better at every position. I will be shocked if this game is within 14. Last year every thing went Utahs way early and it was still an easy Oregon win and this one's a home game. Ducks are a little down this year but not to Utahs level. Utah is not as good as MSU who barely beat Oregon in a game that everything went wrong for them.

Lol. Losing your starting QB and a 14 point swing on one play is everything is coming up Aces for Utah?

Credibility...just left the building.

This.
That goal-line fumble and return for an Oregon td changed the game....and not in Utah's favor.

Having said that, I don't think Utah has much of a chance

Utah was a double digit doc twice last year...and went 2-0.

We have a very good run defense. Everyone is complaining about our lack of sacks this year, but it's a good thing. Pease isn't blitzing as much and we are still stopping the run and getting pressure. Pressure while only rushing 4 = more people in coverage and errant throws. More people in coverage + errant throws = more interceptions, which we've seen.

Adams hasn't shown he can take care of the ball.

Utah has to control the clock with Booker, Covey and the TE's. No turnovers and time consuming drives. Rest the defense and take away possessions from Oregon.

Which brings me to possessions. We have to have turnovers. Oregon fumbled twice vs Mich St. We have to recover those. Adams threw two picks. We have to get those. You have a couple of 6+ min drives and force 3-4 turnovers you almost can't lose. You have a couple long drives and force two turnovers, it's a toss up aka MSU. No long drives and don't force any turnovers? You're screwed.

I'm not too worried about Autzen. This is a veteran team that has played and won everywhere. I don't think the venue will effect them too much.

Early is the key word there and Kendall getting hurt was beneficial for Utah. He got replaced by your real starting quarterback.

If Utah forces 3-4 turnovers and Adams doesnt play or struggles and Utahs offense does something resembling productive then this game could be within 14 points, but still a loss.

Also didnt know this current Utah team had won at Autzen stadium.

Frickin phone. I'm not fixing my grammar/auto correct crap above. Sorry.
