What's new

Official: Fire Dennis Lindsey thread

No doubt the draft is key, but three of the last eight champions did not draft their best player.

Going back, Lakers traded for Shaq, Kareem and Pau (I know, I know, Kobe and Magic were better, but I think we are talking about stars needed to win a title), Sixers traded for Moses and Wilt, etc.....

Pretty far cry from "basically every"

You know why the Lakers can trade for these guys? Because these guys sign off on the trade and give confirmation they will sign long-term for LA. They would never do that for Utah, so any deal like that would be very very risky.

Anyone who is anti DL is a moron. It's that simple. Look what he's done:

Drafted the best player in the 2013 draft late in the first round in Gobert.

The very next year, he drafted an elite defender, a great passer and a kid with an elite ceiling with the fifth pick. How many more wins do we have with Exum this year? Our defense is TERRIBLE the last five minutes of the game. We have 5+ more wins with Exum this year.

Also, Exum was hurt in August, the worst time to get injured. There is nobody to go after and sign at that point. It was just bad luck.

Anyways, back to the 2014 draft. If it was redone today, Hood would be a top 3 pick.

That means in two drafts, Lindsey found a top 5 player late in the first round. Kind of like SA...

Weird.

What this team needs is easily fixable.

1- they need Exum to play. There is 3-5 wins right there. We will say 4. That puts us 7th in the west.

2- we need a bench. That would be another 2 wins. That right there puts us sixth in the west.

3- we need Burks. That is worth a win. That would put us fifth in the west.

The plan all along was to go young this year and let the young people play to see what we have. The bench was purposefully thin to allow Exum, Hayward, Hood, Burks, Gobert to play as much as possible.

When Exum went down, that all went out the window. Burks injury stinks as well, but he is like How Brewer was around here...not nearly as good as jazzfanz experts think he is.

I LOVE the direction the team is headed. Offseason moves:

Dump Burke and if possible Burks. Let Booker walk.

Sign a real backup PG. Someone from a winning organization with playoff experience. Same with the C position. Try to find a Foye-type player to play backup SG. Draft another wing.

We are headed in the right direction. We have the core of a 50 win team. Whether or not we compete for titles comes down to Exum. If he is an all star, we compete for titles. If not, we become Memphis.

The cake is baked. We just need some frosting this summer (bench/vets) and a figurine to go on top (Exum to develop).

The OKC pick is lottery protected. And the 2nd-rounder comes from Detroit, not OKC.

I could be wrong, but I think the earliest OKC's pick can be conveyed is 2018 due to the "Stepien" rule (can't trade all 1st round picks in successive drafts). But hey, don't forget DL also got Pleiss in the trade and signed him to a 3yr deal. Oh yeah, Garrett too. Pure GENIUS!
And also didn't pay kanter tons of money.
Probably the best thing from that trade tbh

I don't want to make my own thread for this, but does anyone think Memphis would entertain trading Marc Gasol for Rudy Gobert?
I think they would

Will be interesting to see a max player get DNP-CD in the playoffs.

You know Gasol is a really good shooter and one of the best, if not the best, passing big man? He would do more for our spacing than most "stretch 4's".

I thought this would be a slam dunk yes from everyone here. I don't think Memphis would ever do it. Gasol has 4 more years on his deal that are on a very fair price. Basically a flawless fit on this team and would give us the veteran presence we need, improve our passing a ton, and improve our offense a ton. What better way to be the next Memphis than to get the best player from Memphis. We would basically be the new version of Memphis with more talent.

I like him no doubt and realize the pressure he puts on a defense. I don't think he will hold up foot injuries on a guy that big are frightening.

When everyone was comparing us to grit and grind grizz I thought we had some shortcomings... Both grizz bigs can punish small defenders. Could you put a small forward on Rudy? Probably... Zach and Marc would kill you.

Again it just relates to where gasol is career wise and his last injury. Healthy gasol who is 28 sure... Foot fracture 32 yo gasol (next year) no thanks.

I like a lot of what you said but I hate that we didn't sign anyone this year... Even if we knew we were going to have Exum the pg problem could have been addressed... Punt! We also were thin at wing especially when you consider Hood's injury struggles... Punt!

We punted on 3rd big but I understand that with Booker being pretty good last year and lyles coming in... That was fine until injuries hit and Booker was playing like garbage.

I;m saying tho....

Exum
Hood
Hayward
Favors
Gasol

Nasty line-up. Lyles/Burks off the bench w/ Neto/2015 draft pick. That is a contending team.
