Locked on Jazz—Is watching film a negative?

So, I think what everyone has neglected to realize is that watching film helps if you have a good leader pointing out things they need to improve upon. The point of any film session should be a coach saying "guys, we really need to improve on X.. let's go to the film. See here, we can see how it works and when it works, it's awesome. But when we slack off, look what happens..."

If you're watching film just for the sake of watching film,

which is apparently what everyone seems to think the Jazz are or should be doing.

It all starts with the coach. If players get their feel-bads hurt by a coach telling them what they need to improve upon, they don't deserve to be in the league. And likewise, if they have no desire to improve, they don't deserve to be in even the D-League.

Yeah, but, well, we had Sloan and all of his apologists who said, "Hey, if coach killer wants to watch film, who's stopping him?"

Yea, who was stopping him? He could watch film all night with his buddies, in fact I think they did watch film all night..... oh wait, they were playing Call of Duty.

I bet Williams is watching film in Jersey.

Im sure of it. Johnson is a huge proponent of it.

Watching and analyzing film (they are 2 different things) is another tool in the coaches toolbox. Imo if you aren't using all the tools available to you in order to help your team win, then you are not doing your job as a coach.

Well said. There is a reason to watch film, and it is called doing everything you can to win. Tell me that most players watching film by themselves are going to look objectively at the mistakes they are making. Watching film helps the players and the coaches.

Oh, you two. Such simple perspectives.

As far as I know, the amount of time a coach can hold for practice is regulated by the CBA. So every minute in the film room as a team is one less on the practice floor. The amount of time a player spends looking at things by himself is not limited.

So, I would think a DVD that was pre-edited and pre-analyzed for each player, but allowing them to view it on their own, would be the ideal way to watch film unless there was a specific thing to address as a team.
