NBA SUMMER LEAGUE 2018

Trae Young reminds me of the struggle Trey Burke had when he played in the summer league. I'm sure he'll get it down surely or will surely be the next jimmer fredette if he doesn't. lol

I was happy on that draft night. I really wish Trey would have succeeded with us.

I was excited, too, but don’t worry, it could still work out as we still are owed a second rounder from Washington for him, should Dennis use it.

Went to the game and here are some keys from it:

-Outside on the North East entrance you can show up early to play games with your kids (basketball, bean bag games, etc).
-They also have a shop with shirts, hats, beanies, jerseys for over half off (All hats and beanies are 12 dollars and picked up a nice one ((originally 30+)).

-I have said this once and I'll say it again, Young has potential to be a huge bust. Played like absolute garbage outside of few passes.
-Lewis and Kidd were fun to watch and played great.
-Niang looks great but is slow, unathletic, and hardly jumps....like ever. There was one time he was driving into the lane, tried to throw up a prayer without even jumping off the ground, and got it emphatically blocked into the crowd.
-Allen struggled shooting but had some excellent passes. Needs to work on dribble penetration and overall shot selection.
-The "fight" with Young and Allen wasn't really anything there. There was another time where Allen blocked Young and Young kinda threw a wild punch into the air.
-You're almost guaranteed to see LifeOnaPlate on the jumbotron or walking around. I've only seen people post his picture on here the last couple weeks and he was on the jumbotron.
-Neto, Gobert, Burks, Royce, Donovan were all there

I would highly suggest showing up 1+ hours before the game starts if you want to get food (long lines), see the outside shops, or wonder around inside. It was extremely packed for a summer league game.

I also suggest parking at the Gateway across the street as parking was free

Not to nitpick, and I know comparing these guys is apples and oranges since they weren't in the same draft, but Mo Wagner sure looks like a better overall player to me than Tony Bradley.

Which one helps you win games? What kind of effect does Gorgeous’ rugged-yet-refined looks have on the opposition’s attention to their game plan?

Both are worth the five year max... I’m not gonna split hairs.

Burke was back-ironing everything in the summer league; which is a common thing with rookies - they come in super pumped trying to make an impression and their shot is too strong.

Young is all over the place, he's off left, off right, short. I think the altitude has something to do with it; but his confidence is shot right now. He looks really bad off the dribble from three - like his shot has zero chance the moment it leaves his hand.

An equal or even bigger concern is that he looks very small on the court and doesn't seem that explosive - he looks VERY out of his league from an athletic standpoint when he's driving to the rim. He's going to get a ton of shots blocked his first couple months in the NBA.

Oh I asked who the f Stanton Kidd is, turns out he recently played in my city, Istanbul. What a shame.
I never got to watch him live although my team Fenerbahce's arena is a few minutes walk away from my home. It's too boring, man. Euro basketball sucks.

Stanton Kidd played 22 games in Turkish League last year (one of the top leagues in Europe)
for David Blatt

Pelton on what translates from SL to NBA :

By contrast, the takeaways regarding which stats translate well from the summer league to the regular season held up well. Rebounding, assist rate and block rate all tend to translate well. Shooting percentages have little predictive power, and steal and turnover rates tend also to be somewhat misleading.

This bodes well for Allen. His general floor game, feel and passing on the move, passing off the pnr have been somewhat of a revelation to me.

Allen is a playmaker. When his shot starts falling, he is going to be a solid player.

The shift from tripping to head-butting actually feels pretty seemless thus far.

Zinedine Zidane would be proud.

On to Vegas.

Two games and then the tournament.

7/7 @ 3 ET v Blazers
7/8 @ 9 ET v Knicks

Bradley put up 15/12/2 blks in UJ SL on 51% shooting.
My concern is his athleticism and explosiveness at the nba level. He missed soooooo many attempts right at the rim, and gets his shot blocked in traffic a ton

Much more of a playmaker than any of us thought
Not me, he played pg for an entire season. Knew he could do this. Been saying that since after the draft
Couple that with the 40M+ cap space in 2019 we are set up nicely going forward.
Can we just fast forward to this time next year?
Yep and Young coming off frosh, Allen, senior.
Who has two wins, and who has two losses
Lol. Don't be dumb.
Idiot!!

I was happy on that draft night. I really wish Trey would have succeeded with us.
I wasn’t. I know how atlanta fans feel. I wanted CJ in that draft. It’s still painful for me to think about

A few observations across all the Jazz Summer league games

Allen has been getting into the paint to pass very effectively. He can't take the next step and finish right now. Allen seems to know all the options and makes good decisions.

Allen seems to be leaning back on some of his open jumpshots...wonder if that is why he had been off.

Allen gets beat defensively but not completely. He funnels the guy towards help. Doesn't seem be physically limited. Appears to be a mental preparation/anticipation thing.

Bradley is a presence in the paint defensively. He appears to be quick enough to react and get to spots. He also battles for boards and position. Still has almost no explosion. Best case scenario for him is as a backup big.

Niang is a constant defensive weakness... he is smart about it though and gives up lower percentage shots. He can shoot and drive a little.

Naz Long is far closer to being a complete NBA player. He is PG sized but has shooting guard skills. Though he is slowly morphing into a combo guard.

Need to see more of Stanton Kidd.
