"There is a strategy behind the administration's see-no-evil indulgence. Trump and his aides want a rich, powerful, well-armed Saudi Arabia to lead a coalition of Arab nations in confronting and constraining Iran and forging new, less hostile relationships with Israel. Trump is also fixated on the benefit to U.S. industry of increased arms purchases by the Saudis.
These reasonable-sounding goals have been shown to be naive and unrealistic. The Saudis are throwing their weight around in ways that make the region more unstable, not less. Salman has done nothing to make it politically feasible for other Arab governments to publicly come to terms with Israel. And the "$110 billion" in arms sales that Trump boasts about is largely a mirage.
Worst of all, Trump has abdicated moral leadership on what should be core issues for any U.S. administration. For at least a century, we have -- at least publicly -- stood for universal human rights. We have stood for democracy. We have stood for freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
We have not always lived up to those ideals -- I covered Chile under dictator Augusto Pinochet, who took power in a U.S.-backed coup -- but no president has refused to even pay lip service to human rights principles, as Trump does. And when governments have killed innocent civilians or imprisoned dissidents or squelched independent media voices, U.S. administrations have reacted forcefully with both words and deeds.
The United States is more than a set of national interests. It is a set of ideas that have inspired seekers of freedom throughout the world. Ronald Reagan made a difference when he went to Berlin and demanded that Mikhail Gorbachev "tear down this wall." Trump, apparently, would have offered to sell the Soviet leader more concrete and barbed wire.
Trump's reaction to Khashoggi's apparent assassination has been stomach-turning and disgraceful, but we have heard admirably honest and tough words from Republican senators such as Bob Corker of Tennessee, Marco Rubio of Florida and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Now we'll see if they -- for once -- take any meaningful action to uphold American ideals. I'm not holding my breath.

Here are a few of the expressions of outrage on Twitter to the president praising an act of physical violence against a journalist. I certainly agree his comments go against what I always felt were part of my country's core values. But Trump is talking to his base, playing to his base, and his base believes, since Trump has stated again and again, that our free press is, in fact, "the enemy of the people". So, of course the crowd applauded his advocacy of violence against the representatives of our free press. Of course they did. He, and they, represent the worst in America. He may as well be Darth Vader, but instead he's the president of our country....

Has anyone seen the video of the antifa guy in (Portland) cowardly verbally attacking a lady on the corner of a street? He's swearing at her and implies her husband must beat her. She then turns around and says she's a widow and her husband died in 9/11. The guy then starts saying how he's glad he's in the grave and he must have been a POS immigrant sodomizer.
Finally, some guys come to protect to old lady and the guy runs off like a little bitch.
I bet this guy who disgustingly attacked this lady probably whines about how Trump treats women.
The antifa is pure garbage (for the most part.) A bunch of uneducated cowards.

Lines like this lead me to believe you've fallen for savior nazi's in modern garb protecting all the little old ladies that are being harassed by the millenial ANTIFA garbage. Forgive me for heading it off at the pass, but this ****'s been played out for years. Seeing someone act like it's new falls into two categories with me; you're either a Russian disinformation/PR account promoting it(the reverse if you lead with a video of someone punching a nazi), or a very naive individual that's fallen victim to it.
Maybe my expectations are too high.

Yeah, it seems like it. Your first response to a post about a guy verbally attacking an old lady is to tell me to calm down and then insist I'm either a Nazi, connected with the Russians or naive.

I'm sure there's been violence from cowards on both sides in these protests in Portland. I condemn everyone who's acted out of hand. I mentioned the my original comment because it popped up in my news feed. After watching the guy verbally bully an old, 9/11 widow the way he did, I couldn't help but mention it. Calm down though, right?
