Can We Please Just Waive NWG?

Lost in all of this is that we could just have signed Neto. An actually respectable 3rd string PG that *locker-room guy/run sets/blah blah argument*.
Yeah, I have a hard time with all the "locker room" BS. I can list a lot of bad locker room decisions, like signing NWG instead of Rudy's friend, making a huge emphasis of "friendship is magic" and "we're going to bring the same team back" but then waive Jerebko, etc.

Amazing... just jaw dropping.

I mean Shaq had a 2.8 bpm on a ****** NBA team and was an astonishing net plus 12.2 (Rudy was a net 10.9 for reference) in the NBA. But those numbers are from the NBA so its probably not super applicable to the Jazz who also play in the NBA... oh wait.
Yeah, Im for signing Shaq.

Sorry for trying to put some optimism on NWG. I guess y'all can just continue to be negative nancys about everything that doesnt go your way.

If Matisse Thybulle was out on the waiver wire and we didn't offer him something people would riot. Shaq is a better overall player and just as disruptive. Matisse is younger and has more potential but is much less complete currently.

NBA GMs just love brand names and pedigree. They'd rather have Mason Plumlee at 8/25 than a number of nba centers that are available at the minimum that are basically as good.

lmao, hell no he isnt.

Optimism gets you what? I’m calling it as I see it. You can eat drink breathe optimism it won’t make NWG good... didn’t work with TB.

This reminds me of a term that trended for a brief period of time that DL used: haul. He was talking about the obvious talent of Kanter, which was evidenced by "the haul" we got in return for him. I thought of this because when you said it didn't work for TB, I was going to remind you of the haul we got back for him.

I gave a very clear rationale for why they’re holding onto to NWG for now.... several hours ago.

Shaq has better per 36 numbers across the board including deflection stats. He can actually do stuff with the ball and Matisse can’t. Thybulle has more potential because he’s younger but currently I think Shaq is better.

YouTube full games. Shaq is a good defender/distruptor but Thybulle is everywhere and he puts his hand on the ball almost every time.
Shaq is his equal in steal blocks and deflections and gets twice as many boards and twice as many points... so Shaq puts his hand on the ball and is everywhere too.

I can pretty much guarantee you that the the #1 skill NWG has in the eyes of DL is BALL SECURITY. This feature probably has the same outsized influence on the analysis of NWG’s skill level as offensive rebounding had for Tony Bradley.

I’d wager that DL sees NWG as a valuable contributor in training camp, since he knows the system and can get his squad into sets without making frustrating turnovers or bad decisions. The team gets more and better repetitions this way.
/thread.

But we could still sign Shaq and keep NWG for these very reasons. Except we have an owner who’s gone into hesitation mode.

I get all the positives about Shaq...but before you protest in front of DLs home consider this. There are 30 NBA franchises. All of them have significantly more knowledge on Shaq and his background. There a million things they know that we don’t, and something in there is preventing him from having a home. It could be a character issue, injury issue, maybe he wants more money...point is, if it was easy as looking at a bball-ref page, he would have been signed already.

Don’t we have a FO that prides themselves only pulling guys from the unwanted pile? We’ve done it with two guys and we assume we will do it with any guy we grab off the heap. There’s certainly a correlation between league-wide FOs desiring players and them having actual talent (and vice versa) but that correlation is much weaker than how we perceive it.

That’s all well and good but this has happened before. These guys are not infallible. We act like this is rocket surgery but fact is sometimes the league just misses on guys.

OK...everyone wants something good from the unwanted pile. NWG is in the unwanted pile so that is a totally moot point. Again, there are 30 NBA teams. It’s not just UTA that is passing from him.

I would drop NWG and sign Shaq in a heartbeat. Would have done the same for RHJ who only got a camp deal. But I live in the real world and know that there’s more to it than bball-ref page and some YouTube highlights.

It doesn’t mean Shaq is actually bad. Several players have been dumped from one or multiple teams and gone on to find success. Just saying that there is a reason why Shaq is in the position he’s in...and it’s likely intel we don’t know about.

Sure...but don’t assume you’re a Nostradamus because you have access to the internet. There’s a reason why players get dumped and there’s a reason why Shaq got dumped twice by horrible teams and can’t find a team right now.

I am 100% for signing him. But I’m not naive enough to think that there isn’t something we don’t know here.

Just an FYI I like Wood last year when he was released ( I know he had maturity issues) and I liked Harrison when the Suns let him go. I thought the Lakers got a steal on Caruso and that he was worth a gamble.

GMs that sign Wes Matthews types when they are vets are making solid moves and are good GMs... the real money is in finding the next Wes Mathews doe. Shaq will get a chance somewhere... I’m not the only person on the bandwagon... plenty of media guys including front office types have also rated him highly.

Per 36 isn't great for someone getting 10 minutes a game. His stats are good but that wasn't what I tried to say. When I watch Matisse, I see him not just getting deflections or steals. He is busting screens, blocking paths in every play and it's not just against his guy. It feels like he is a little Rudy defending everywhere.

When I watched Shaq I saw a plus defender that has quick hands who can guard multiple positions but his impact doesn't go much beyond whoever he is guarding.

In the end, I would love him to sign here and I am sure he would find a role off the bench.

You are assuming a perfectly efficient market and it’s not at all.
