Utes 2011 Football Discussion

Part of BYU fans charm is the fact that they never know when to stop. Why you would come in and run any type of smack on a school that very recently waltzed out of Provo with a 44 point victory is just silly. You would at least think that with most fan bases, a 54-to-10 beatdown at the hands of their rivals would at least curtail the smack talk until the following season. But like I said, they just don't when to quit.

Personally, I love the fact that some BYU fans in here are obviously taking so much pleasure in Utah's struggles during their 1st year of Pac 12 play. It just proves how miserable their sad little lives are going to be in the near future when Utah is indeed competing for trips to the Rose Bowl. And yes, it will be the near future despite what the sad boys in blue will try and tell you. All QB issues aside, I think Whitt has built a team with a young, incredibally talented nucleus. As far as the QB spot goes, Wilson is a great get for the Utes but I'm sure they're not done in regards to going after they type of QB Utah simply didn't get in the past. I think every Ute fan can feel extremely confident about the direction this team is headed.

I'm sure the Rose Bowl jabs make BYU fan feel a little bit better. As Ute fans, we shouldn't begrudge them that. After all, what do they have to look forward to? Year 1 of independence doesn't seem to be working, possibly the most coveted recruit in BYU history (certainly the most hyped) is sitting on the bench because he's just not very good, it looks like BYU is going to get shut-out in regards to having a place at the table in regards to being in a big time conference, as of right now their 1 bowl tie-in sucks, they have no answer as to how they're going to fix playing nothing but WAC squads during the last month of each season, and quite frankly I think whether or not this team can survive long-term independence while managing to stay relevant on a national scale is a huge question mark to put it mildly.

Hell, taking shots at Utah is about all those poor ******** have left. Let's be the bigger men and at least let them hold on to something.

A nice read today from Ted Miller who writes the PAC 12 Blog on ESPN.com

Here's a small portion of the aritcle:

.......This is not the best Utah team of the past eight or so years, and we knew that in the preseason. In fact, there was a strong whiff of rebuilding in Salt Lake, whatever conference the Utes played in, though the Utes recent success allowed for some to optimistically posit a reloading instead.

Utah is not going to get stuck in the bottom third of the Pac-12 going forward. Trust me on that.

Of course, it does need to get better, which means taking advantage of its new status living among the haves.

Said Whittingham, "We've got to keep recruiting, we've got to keep working, we've got to keep developing the guys we've already got in the program in the weight room."

So, sure, if you want to trash talk Utah, go ahead. That's what we do with each other on the Pac-12 blog.

But just don't take yourself seriously. If you actually think your team has a new conference patsy, the Pac-12 blog is here to tell you that expectations is going to let you down.

It's nice to hear that type of opinion from somebody who doesn't have any real reason to over hype Utah's future in the PAC 12.

He's right. Bottom 1/3rd is a stretch. Bottom half type team year in and year out over a 10 year span? Now we're talking.

This year is about as bad as it gets for Utah, and they may not even finish in the bottom half this year. Over a 10 year stretch? You're crazy.

You're probably the worst fan on here in regards to your how you try to paint everything BYU in a positive light and everything Utah in a negative. I'm just fine with you thinking that Utah will be a constant in the bottom half of the PAC standings. You are literally dead wrong on almost every single thing you try and forecast.

I think both programs are in good shape and have bright futures with, of course, some down years too.

I disagree on that. I think years down the road we'll look back on this era as the time that BYU felt their values as a school were better served as an indepenent. I don't think there is anything wrong with BYU choosing that path. In fact, I think it's pretty admirable. However I think BYU's best shot at becoming the BYU of old that their fans expect was by doing whatever they could to get into a BCS conference. It would have helped with bowls, it would have helped with recruiting and it obviously would have helped with BCS access. All of those things become huge problems for BYU as a long term independent.

That's fine you think that, but I don't think their program is in any worse shape than when it was in the Mountain West. Plus, it's obvious they're trying to improve their conference and schedule and tv contracts. Not looking too terrible to me and I'm a Ute fan.

Never said they're in any worse shape than they were in the MWC. However, I know if I were a BYU fan, I'd certainly want to know what the plan is in regards to better bowl games, better BCS access, and keeping pace recruiting wise now that your in-state rival has the Pac 12 name behind it. Not only that, how are they going to improve in all of those areas while not having the backing of a BCS conference? Recruiting wise, BYU will always do well with the devout LDS kids who grew up loving BYU, but let's be honest, you need more than those type of kids if you want to be considered a national program. Not only that, but in-state kids who are on the fence about going to Utah or BYU currently have a lot more reasons to choose Utah. It doesn't mean Utah will win those head-to-head battles each and every time, but how much extra ammo do you want your rival to have? If you were BYU, wouldn't it be nice to walk into a kids house who Utah is also recruiting and be able to sell him on the positives of playing a Big 12 schedule, having a Fiesta Bowl tie-in, etc?

I think these are all legit questions and I actually know quite a few BYU fans who agree with me on that. If you think BYU has a bright future, obviously that's your right. I just see too much uncertainty at this point to call it anything but a huge unknown.

Again, leaving the Mountain West doesn't show that BYU is interested in improving it's program?

BYU is in a better place than they were 1 year ago
Utah is in a better place than they were 1 year ago

Either side that says otherwise will get the Homer label attached to their groin for the next year.

Longterm which is in better position from where they stand now? Utah due to the conference
Can &(#$ change overnight and completely have us having a different opinion? Yes

You are literally dead wrong on almost every single thing you try and forecast.

You should just start calling me Duckstorsdamus from now on. I said Utah was going to be a bottom half Pac 12 team before the season started....guess what they are? Bottom half team. I'm 1-0 on the subject of Utah in the Pac 12. 2-0 if you count them being USC's bitch as a prediction of mine. I'm on fire.

He's got a point there.

For right now? Absolutley.

BYU couldn't sit in the MWC and watch Utah leave to the PAC 12. BYU fans would have come unhinged. Leaving the MWC obviously improved BYU's TV revenue right off the bat just to name 1 of the positives. My entire point is, I think BYU went independent with the idea of eventually landing in the Big 12. It certainly wouldn't have been very proactive for BYU to sit in the MWC while hoping for an eventual invite to the Big 12. That is why I have always maintained that going independent was the right move.

However, with BYU missing out on the first round of the Big 12 adding a team, I think it raises some fairly obvious questions about the long term viability of independence. Now I realize things can change and fully aknowledge that BYU may eventually get an invite, but if it is true that the Big 12 TV partners have some concerns about BYU, what's going to change between then and now that is going to make it easier for BYU to get in? Sunday play is, was, and will continue to be a huge obstacle for BYU because there is obviously no way they ever change their mind on that issue. How firm is BYU about maintianing rights for some BYUtv broadcasts and how many national TV appearances is BYU going to demand each year?

Right now, I think it's fair to say that the odds have tilted in the favor of BYU not going to the Big 12 at any time in the future. With that being said, I think the questions I've asked about BYU improving their future as an independent are more than fair. If BYU fans would actually like to have an honest dialogue about those questions, I'd welcome it. However, my guess is that the usual suspects will continue with the name calling, and passive-agressive insults and that's fine too. In fact, I wasn't expecting anything different.

Memo to you and Trout: Yes, as of right now Utah has 3 Pac losses. However, the season isn't over and if they win-out in conference, a 6-and-3 conference record most likely puts them in the top half of the Pac, not the bottom. Now, I don't know if Utah is capabale of winning-out, but claiming victory on a prediction that hasn't came true yet is very premature and quite frankly, very predictable from the likes of you. Wait until the end of the season to pat yourself on the back buddy.

And even if you do end up right, you've been wrong so much more. I don't have the time to necro-post all of your absurd predictions over the last couple of years, but you and I both know there's plenty of material for me to choose from. Off hand, I remember your decleration that BYU would absolutley not lose another game after the TCU loss last year. I remember countless predictions of BYU blow-outs that ended up being hard fought nail-biters and in many cases, games that BYU ended up losing. I certainly remember the beginning of this season when you declared that BYU had the best QB in the nation, the best offensive line in the nation, and the best WR corp in the nation.

I actually could probably pull a lot more from memory, but what's the point?

You know, seeing this thread makes me think a lot of Utah fans are relieved/happy/satisfied that the quarterback got injured. Gives them an excuse for explaining how bad their record has been (will be?).

I say this because BYU fans have acquiesced to their team's suckitude. Utah fans are clinging on to that last bit of hope.

Aside from Utah's QB problems, I think they have a very good roster. It's also a very young roster that I think has tremndous potential in the future. I feel no need to apologize for that just because you've accepted your teams "sucktitude".
