Game Thread Jun 12, 2021 06:30PM MT: Jazz at Clippers - Game 3

Added to Calendar: 06-12-21

Batum scoring 17, only getting 1 foul, playing 35 minutes and stretching Rudy out of the lane killed us.

Thats all a good team has to do - put a shooter at the 5 and Rudy goes from being elite to being just pretty good. He or we have to get Batum into foul trouble.

You do know that they went small in the first two games as well right? And we won.

Mitchell might be hurt. Jazz sucked at getting layups. Defense was bad but we also struggled consistently finding an offense.
What happened to Mitchell?

Also, why is Oni getting any time? What does he do to justify his lack of offense? I’d much rather have Hughes in who might be able to hit a 3 or something.

Yeah, couldn't defend and LA was pretty aggressive all game long. Donovan got injured. He was limping with his ankle wraped in ice when leaving the court.
This is why we need Conley back. Or a functional replacement. You can’t task Mitchell like this. Especially since he’s already coming off injury. We need our roles to be played. He cannot be the primary ballhandler, distributer, and scorer.

Shaq Harrison has a total of 10 minutes in 3 games for the Denver team who has 3 of their guards down against CP3 and Booker who he, theoretically, matches up well against. I don't think he would sniff the floor even with Conley and Niang out of rotation.
Austin Rivers or Torrey Craig would be nice. Why didn’t we pick either of those guys up?

Maybe... he gave them more productive minutes than Oni has given us.

it didn’t have to be Shaq but there was a clear need for one more defender. We have been lucky as hell Royce hasn’t been in foul trouble. We burned assets and a spot for Matt Thomas who looks like trash even when playing against scrubs.

Mitchell went up for a layup, missed it and while Favors, I think, was going up for the put back, Mitchell took a shot to the knee. Favors was also called for offensive interference and Mitchell hobbled off the court. He came out but by the time he did, the Jazz was down 20 and he didn't play again. Quin says he's fine. But I don't know. The Jazz treat injuries like they're some covert mission during the Cold War.

He came down on a play limping, not much on the replay. Went down the tunnel, came back to the bench, later put ice on. Was chatting with a super smiley Conely for a while. Game was out of reach when it happened. Draw your conclusions.

True that he is still elite, but when he gets stretched out of the lane, he simply cannot impact the game with his elite skill set at the same level.

A team that knows how to execute will make him a lesser player. That's why playoff basketball shows that his skill set doesn't translate against every opponent.

If Batum is allowed to play 32+ minutes and shoot 40% from 3, Rudy cannot impact the game the same way. At the very least, he has to get a ton more rebounds. 10 rebounds is disappointing.

He had 20 rebounds last game iirc

Cy may have hit the nail on the head in another thread when he noted this injury could be an aggravation of Don's foot from a couple of years ago. It was really strange the way he came down and never put his right foot down.

Niang was a self-inflicted dagger in the 4th. He single-handedly grew the Clipper lead by like 8 points in one minute.
All on forced ****. He’s been forcing it all playoffs like he has to prove something. I’d have yanked his ***. The three turnovers and the three he shot were terrible. He also challenges Mann’s mid range shot from behind with Rudy standing right there and picks up a foul on what was almost surely going to be a miss.

So bad... just realize you are a role player... shoot when you are open. Don’t dribble unless you have to.

Niang was great in the Memphis series.
you mean when he averaged six points on 34% shooting?

By comparison, in the first round Rivers averaged 11 points on 48% shooting. And Cam Payne averaged 12 points on 41% shooting. Both making roughly the same amount of money as Niang but the difference being it didn't take Nuggets or Suns two years to get them to where they are now.

That's why people called for an end to the Niang experiment. It's just not worth it.

Like the same argument can be made about Royce. I'd say Torrey Craig is not that much worse than him. Except he's making roughly 1/7 of his salary and the Suns basically grabbed him for free . What is the point of doing those so-called development projects on scrubs and hoping them to become backups one day, when we can just go straight into the market to get a bunch of backups to play right away?

The cynical part of me suspects that the new contract is factoring in here.
