Roster Balancing Guys

I posted this in another thread, but fits here too:

Looking here: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/nba-player-ratings/
Here are the SG/SF with a Deffensive RAPTOR above 1.5 and a total RAPTOR above 2.0 (exluding stars) :

Derrick White, Nic Batum, Fred Van Vleet, Danny Green, Deanthony Melton, Bogdon Bogdonavic, Furkan Korkmaz, Derrick Rose, Jae Crowder, Kyle Anderson, OG Anunoby, Ben Simmons, Mattise Thybulle, Lu Dort, Jarred Vanderbilt, Robert Covington, Alex Caruso

The only guys here who might be gettable and make sense are White and Roco. Memphis isn’t trading pieces of their young core to us. Philly as a trade partner involving these guys just doesn’t make sense. The other guys are on teams that are good or part of a young core so they’re not trading them.

If Dame is traded, I wonder if they’d later be interested in Clarkson for Roco. I doubt it. I feel like they’d just want to acquire young assets or draft picks but who knows.

The only thing I'm keeping tabs on right now is Marcus Smart. If he doesn't extend I'm curious what the plan is there. Not sure if Boston lands Schroeder... if they do I am not sure that makes Marcus more or less available. If they can't extend Marcus I can see them saying Dunn is fine in the Smart role and lets go get something different... and then JC becomes appealing.

I'm fine with Smart as a FA. He may stick around. His market may not be as awesome as he thinks next summer. He's not a true PG and I'm not sure Boston wants to put him in the starting lineup. He's fiery and may have worn out the younger guys a bit. One thing to consider... the Celtics are "his team". He was there first.. he was the heart and soul... they may want it to be Tatum and Brown's team and having Smart there might be prohibitive. I think he might be a little more easy to deal with in a situation that he doesn't have as much ownership in... not sure if that makes sense. Boston is a little rudderless imo... not sure how they add to Tatum and Brown in a meaningful way... they seem to be waiting out Bradley Beal... not sure swapping Smart of JC changes the chances of that happening at all.

Anyway... that's the situation to watch... something is brewing over there... they've been real quiet.

Can I go on record again with how much I hate the rules regarding a TPE?

It never made sense to me why the Jazz were open to moving Ingles, but if we put two and two together, that’s a trade for Smart that feels realistic. Even though both players are well established on their teams it doesn’t look like either player is part of the long term future.

It makes infinitely more sense to me to trade one of the high volume offense, no defense players…but the rumors are what they are.

Trading Ingles was a backup plan to balance out the roster if free agency went poorly (they didn’t get their target(s)). Once they got them, then the owner and the org’s mouthpieces suddenly wanted to go on record about keeping Joe.

I would do a Bogey for Markannen. Better size, better drive and handle, younger, and bounce. You would lose volume threes contested. But Markannen is a 42% career three point shooter when uncontested. And he is cheaper.

It just seems like there is some smoke to Smart being available in trade. The additions of Richardson and Dunn seem to be additions that make sense if they thought they'd end up moving him. They could end up with max space next year if they waive and stretch Horford next year and don't extend Smart.

Not saying it would be for JC but I think they end up moving him at some point.

Boston gets schroeder for Taxpayer MLE for a year...

Dunn or Smart likely get moved... at pg/sg they have Dennis, Smart, Richardson, Pritchard, Dunn, Nesmith... couple of those guys can play 2 or 3.

I don’t know much about Dunn with his health but I like the idea of absorbing him with the TPE because we get the best of both worlds. Poor man’s Smart and keep JC. We can be patient with his health.

That's a $16M deal with the tax. I think we'd need a second rounder or two for that.

Okay. Restock the cupboards. Game on. Get Ainge in on the deal. I’m sure he wants to screw Stevens over somehow.

I dont see the scoring off the bench if we move JC. Butler is a complete unknown and may not see the floor. HW is a defensive first guy. I only move Clarkson if I think the offense that Gay brings gives us the same boost JC did and I dont see that happening.
In a situation where we trade JC for help on defense, I’d expect Bogie to become a primary scorer in the second unit. We’d need the stopper to play with the closers, so Bogie is the guy to get shifted. Imo.

Rudy Gay can soak up some usage too.

I think that is more likely then Bogey providing bench scoring but I dont think the Jazz will move JC.
Why? Cuz Bogie wouldn’t be good at it? Or because you don’t think the jazz would shift bogie’s minutes in the event of a JC trade?
