Trade deadline discussion

It’s a lot easier than pulling assets out of thing air.
We have Temple level assets. Expiring contracts is all it should take. I think JB would also be more than enough... though I'd be upset if we moved him.

Yeah, I wouldn’t trade JB for someone on Temple’s level. The only way we get a Temple or Craig is in a 3-for-1, which means the other team has to waive some guys, so I don’t know that anyone in the $5M ballpark is reasonable.

Unless we used the trade exception and waived our guys. I know you can’t aggregate salary with a TPE but can you include other guys in the trade to get off guaranteed money? For instance trading just Dok and Hughes for Temple and using the TPE?

I'm predicting no meaningful trade this year unless someone gets hurt. May see a deal where we send out Udoka with a second rounder for some lesser salary but I think we are looking to the waiver wire after guys on expiring deals get cut. Will be slim pickings since we don't have a role available. Basically this is our team. I'm cool with that.

My prediction is Udoka is traded for a guy that was a second round pick this year to reduce our luxury tax burden this year. We likely give up a pick or cash to make it happen... probably both. Detroit, OKC, San Antonio are likely the other team in the deal.

In this article from the ringer Kevin O'Connor mentions the possibility of the Jazz packaging Bogey at the deadline along with future picks and youth for Jerami Grant. Grant currently has torn ligaments in one of his fingers and is out a least the next 6 weeks.

I could get behind a Bogey for Grant swap somehow. Grant's 3 pt shot has slipped some, but he would more than make up for it in defensive presence and shot-creating ability. Grant in the starting 5 would be pretty tight.

I think Grant and Harrison Barnes are the two guys I would be willing to move Bogey for.

I'm not sure Barnes is that big an upgrade over Bogey at this point. He's better defensively but it's not a gigantic leap, and scoring they are pretty even. It would have to be the right deal for that one for sure.

There is some part of me that believes everything will fall apart if we trade Clarkson for some reason. Like even though he's clearly the worst player out there and he takes a ton of shots, his intangible likability factor just trumps everything else and somehow makes Utah better.
To build off this: I think Clarkson really embodies the "just keep shooting" mentality of the Jazz. Like if he wasnt on the team, everyone would suddenly become more conscious of missing shots and having less confidence, resulting in more passed up shots. Clarkson is a steady reminder just to shoot the ball.

I think he's a bigger upgrade than Grant. I'd have a few hesitations on a Grant deal. I wouldn't want to give up the "young players and first round picks" that all of these deals seem to assume we have... we don't.

Bogey and Barnes are nearly mirror-images of each other. Both are scoring nearly the same on nearly the same splits, and both have a -1.6 DBPM, just for one basic measure of defense. An even swap would yield a pretty minor upgrade if any. Barnes is a better rebounder, but with Gobert/Whiteside both being monsters on the glass this year, and the way we play it is hard to say if that will translate that much. Grant is a better scorer and much better defender than either of them, averaging over a steal and a block this year even being a bit off. And considering our needs on perimeter D he would be a real upgrade over Bogey, and Barnes for that matter, while still being a scoring threat and a floor spacer despite his lower 3 pt percentage this year. But the point about how do we get him (or anyone really) is valid. It will take more than we can put together, for those very reasons. And frankly, I doubt the FO has it in them to make any kind of move on this level this year. We are far more likely to see them stand pat and dance with the one that brung'em, so to speak.

I think the rebounding is helpful so I think Barnes > Bogey... but like you said... it ain't by a lot. I do wonder if Barnes would get better looks with our group. I think the rebounding is one of the problems we have that could be partially solved with some personnel upgrades.

Grant has more scoring volume but I will take the efficiency over the volume. HIs defense has been good in the past but I'm just not sure he is interested in being the Denver Grant. I think his mindset may not be where we need it. He is a FA end of next year and likely in line for his last huge payday... he will want the stats to align with that goal. He's also out for like 6-8 weeks with a thumb injury... that likely bothers his shooting the rest of the year. Maybe he'd be even better in our ball movement offense and maybe he'd be great on defense with an amazing rim protector. I get it for both Barnes and Grant.... I just am not sure the cost of Bojan and multiple firsts is worth it at all. Those picks would need to have little/no protections and would be 4-5 years out... could cost the franchise years on the treadmill of mediocrity later.

Is no one at all concerned that Grant was pretty bad in the Jazz/Denver series? Then he goes to a terrible team and puts up stats.

I really dont trust that he's going to get into a 3rd/4th option role and stand out.

I'm not very high on Grant (especially with him out injured). I don't mind him in Bojan's spot, but I know it'd cost more than that and I'm not really interested at that point.
