What's new

Simone Fontecchio Two-year deal

I for one am excited to see Jared Butler take on a bigger role. I think there is something there just beneath the surface that he will tap into and we will get better performance than any of us expected. It always felt like he was just a few minutes or a few games from some kind of break out last year, but he just didn't get the shot, I really want to see him with 25+ MPG this year and see what he can do.

Yeah I feel that way as well. From the post game interview yesterday, although he was known for his scoring at Baylor he feels his biggest strength is as a facilitator. Also said he needs to raise his defensive intensity. Love his candor! He’s like the Angelic version of Mitchell IMO.

The shooting being terrible is so confusing to me. It gives me hope that there is something weird/fluky to it because he shot so well in college. I will die on Butler Island if I must.

I really think he just never got into a rhythm and the coach pulling him the second he misses a shot or makes any mistake will kill your confidence. I think he does a lot better this year.

It's not the shooting for me, it is more likely to come than not with time. Especially if they are catch and shoot opportunities.

My biggest worry is the lack of seperation. I thought that overdribbling was a simple fixable issue that needed to be outgrown. Now, I think he is busting out moves for 6-7 seconds just to create an advantage because he can't break down defenses consistently. It really hampers his potential and limits him to be a secondary ball-handler off the bench and that's not very alluring.

It was bad in summer league... but last year in real NBA games he got so much separation... so I'm actually not too worried on that end.

It seemed to me when the ball was in his hands the ball just stuck and then when the shot clock was running down he or someone else foists up a difficult shot. I saw this when he played in a couple of GLeague games last year and in those games he was awful and the Stars got boat raced.

This guy's idol is none other than JIngles.
I read an article (not going to find it now) that the "idol" thing is a misnomer.

Rather it was something like Italy was playing Australia, and Fontecchio got asked who he admired on Australia's team. So he said Ingles, and then some other news organization ran with it and eventually the term "idol" started to appear with the story, though Fontecchio was clear later that Ingles is definitely not an idol for him.

He’s just not that tall and can’t jump over the top of people like Spida can (ever notice the elevation on his jumper?). So in that respect, the adjustment to the pro game has been problematic for him. I think that both he and the organization realize now that his natural NBA position is the one. He is a very good passer and assist man and alluded to that role being a strength in yesterday’s post game interview.

Reminds me of the time the Spurs signed this scrub from the Greek league for a year in the season Robinson was injured, by the name of Dominique Wilkins.
Impressed by your memory (I hadn't realized Wilkins was as peripatetic as Wikipedia says he indeed was), but not really seeing why this Jazz signing reminds you of Wilkins's end of career wanderings.

A new article on his path to the NBA (interesting that it includes a bit of alienation of his original team/fans):

It would be kind of depressing if Fontecchio ends up being really good that it makes us rethink if we blew it up too soon.
It struck me he is the Royce replacement. My friends at Best Buy are telling me that we shouldn't be so sure that DA is going to blow it up. Their reasoning is that DA and Ryan are getting more pi$$ed by the day at the Knicks. The rumor was that DM was going to be shipped first but Miami didn't have their ducks in a row quite yet. The Jazz FO was already POed about the stunt the Knicks brass pulled off in the playoffs. Now the Knicks are treating the Jazz like they have to trade him and DA and the owner are not having their tomfoolery. I wouldn't be surprised that DM and team currently on the roster are still here on opening night.

If Donny sticks around, I think he is still gone by the trade deadline. And if you aren't going to blow it up, they should have kept Rudy and used Donny, Royce, and either Bogey/JC to retool. If you had kept Rudy and traded Donny, Mike has plenty left in the tank to be a good facilitating PG, especially with Rudy. At this point, NOT blowing it up doesnt make sense.

It sounded like they felt Donovan was the problem and offered him to trade first. The deal didn't obviously consummate and suddenly the TWolves were on the phone. The pressure is off now as the Jazz are out of luxury tax territory and have some incoming assets. I know a lot has been written but the longer this plays out I doubt the trade gets made. The Knicks got caught jackpotting around and we will see if the trade, blow up and tank occurs.

My friends at Best Buy are telling me ...
I'm not sure I want to ask this, but what are you trying to say here? Are you saying you're talking to people who directly know a bit about the Jazz's thinking? Or are you simply referring to the speculation of certain people with some interest in the Jazz?

Can you connect the dots a little more here? What does the Miami situation have to do with the Knicks? Where is the idea that the Knicks are treating the Jazz like they have to trade him coming from? It certainly doesn't seem to be what the Knicks are operating like in public (post-playoffs at least). If the Jazz weren't interested in the Knicks offer, why would they even engage with the Knicks?

I guess some of this could make some sense if the argument is that the Jazz didn't intend to trade Gobert and were originally interested in trading DM for the Herro package and retooling that way. But then the Gobert offer turned into an offer that couldn't be refused. Then the Herro package got put on hold because the Heat were actually more interested in Durant and were (and continue to treat) Mitchell as the fallback option. Is this basically what you're saying?

But even if this is the case, things still get murky. Why are the Knicks involved at all? Are the Jazz still operating on the idea that they want to trade DM no matter what? Otherwise, why would there be frustration with the Knicks negotiations? If the Knicks don't offer a sufficient package, just move on. Why all the leaks about being close to a deal?
