Game Thread Oct 24, 2022 06:00PM MT: Jazz at Rockets

His b2b games espec. after travel have been all his career quite hard. I don't know how he could on becoming summer to train better so his shot technique won't break down with these. Good news is: last season it got bit better in the second part of the season. His 3pt also struggled last season for the first part, but he was shooting almost 40% from deep in 2022 for Cavs. Overall he was more active in the offense I am used to with his b2b games. So it is a step forward with this matter too.

Houston was also throwing a double team at him from time to time as well. He's likely to get a steady diet of that going forward.

I can't help but wonder what Hardy saw in practice that made him glue Simone to the bench. He never even really gave him or Ochai an opportunity in the preseason to prove themselves in games so we have basically nothing to evaluate them on. Based on what we saw in the summer though and the short stint last night the guy has an elite shooting stroke. Hopefully this is the beginning of him joining the rotation but I'm not counting on it.

Truth. It was kind of a brutal way to open to season in terms of travel. Even then, they kept it pretty close. No such thing as a moral victory, but that was grit.
I didn’t see this one but it’s not hard to imagine a little home cookin regarding questionable calls. We’d just played well enough to overcome them to this point but then finally ran out of gas I guess. We were never going to win every game but you have to love a team that competes hard every single night always within striking distance. Let’s see how we respond now tomorrow night.

I think it is the fouls. In EuroLeague and FIBA matches defenders can be very physical, and it is ok. In NBA defending with similar physicality would see the player thrown out after a few minutes. Last night Simone played well, but got to foul trouble fast, so he still has to learn what he is allowed to do in NBA matches and what he isn't.

As for why Ochai hasn't seen play-time, I have no clue. He must have been horribad in practice, or suffering from some minor injuries.

Regarding Lauri last night, he was double-teamed (nearly) every time he got the ball. In EuroBasket he was double- and triple-teamed in most matches, but he still did deliver; last night he very obviously was out of gas and wasn't able to handle it (he even missed his free-throws, so he must really have been running on empty tank). It is a pretty safe bet he will see double-teams from now on, and it is up to the coaching to come up solutions how to be able to use the free space the others in Jazz uniform can take advantage of their extra space.

naw and tht should never see the floor. nothing good does or can come from it. they suck, they are not part of the future and they will never have any trade value. agbaji, simone and bolmaro should get all their minutes.

I really like what I'm seeing from THT. I like his aggressiveness and I think his game is rounding into shape. NAW hasn't been given the opportunity to do much of anything but I still think he ends up being a really good role player. Hopefully we are able to dump Conley, Clarkson and Gay in the near future so that we can find consistent minutes for THT, NAW, Ochai and Simone.

A lot of people may have missed it, but the above statement actually came as a package-insert with both of those guys when they arrived in Utah.

Kessler only got 8 minutes last night albeit didn't do much. Sexton only got 15 and was productive in those minutes.

On a 2nd night of a back to back you would think those two would've gotten more playing time. Meanwhile some of the veteran guys, Conley (27 mins) and Clarkson (28 mins), didn't seem to have it especially Mike. Markk looked a little slow last night too. It was good to see Fontecchio finally get on the floor though.

This game lacked energy. I fell asleep 3 times in 3rd and 4th quarter. I woke up when Laruso came in. There was something fun to watch. But we looked like the walking dead out there.

My biggest take away from the game was that even though the team was gassed, it took coach a long time to start giving other guys minutes. I think he should have tried some other players earlier but he just let us slog through the night for the most part.

NAW and Laruso getting minutes was nice to see even if NAW was meh. I think Sexton could have seen more minutes and this felt like Ochai's coming out party as well. But we didn't have the juice from the starters and understandably so.

I agree, it's a bad sign that Hardy is too invested in the win vs. developing players and giving sensible minutes to the veterans. Red flag.

Yeah it almost feels on the down low they were more interested in showcasing Conley, Gay, Beas, JC last night than giving minutes to the younger legs.
The alternative is Hardy was so desperate for a win he would risk wearing down the vet players..I doubt it but what do I know...
At least Simone go his feet wet. NAW only getting 5 minutes last night against the Houston kids kinda tells you where he stands. Agbaji couldn't get any playing time that might be a little concerning.

Obviously THT has some questionable decision making at times, but he also makes a lot of great passes. It's not perfect on offense by any means but he's getting better. His defense has been near elite.

I really don't get the THT slander
He's a weird *** player man. You can do stuff that is bad and have it go unnoticed... you can do weird **** that is bad and it sticks out like a sore thumb. I think he is much better than NAW who is just regular bad and not weird bad.

He does a ton of great stuff on the court as well. Absolutely no one on this team outside of Vanderbilt can play defense the way THT does.

He does have blinders on some of his drives, but when he doesn't over commit to the bully bally drive, he can make some nice simple reads for drive and kicks (or like yesterday when he drew the double team on the perimeter and used his length to wrap a pass around the defender to Vando at the nail who swung it to the corner for the open 3, great hockey assist that he created) His spot up 3pt shooting has even looked clean.

Hes well worth developing. There's a lot there to tap into.

I'd much rather watch THT or Fontecchio whose games have room to grow than Gay who doesn't have the legs to keep up with Houston's athletes.. Even if it wasn't a back to back I could say fairly confidently Gay cannot defend the athletic kids Houston was throwing out there.

I'm fine with him playing. He has made some awesome defensive plays. Most are negated with dumb turnovers or when he drives into a pack with no plan and has open shooter on the perimeter. Go on a develop him... it will definitely lead to loses.

I'd say it's too early for a red flag but call me cautious. I saw too much of this during Quin's years. If I were on the bench watching the lack of effort against a lower level team, I would have been frustrated to not be playing. When there is a lack of energy, bring in some energy. Not too difficult. But it's only the fourth game...
