2023 NBA Draft “Hot Takes” Thread

Don't want to be a Dick but in a draft with this much depth and potential you should probably avoid taking Gradey where is projected to go. He is a bit too one dimensional and will be the target of NBA offenses to attack. I dont know if this is a hot take.

I guess I'm still unconvinced by Anthony Black, he is too limited offensively, so he may struggle to stay on an NBA court especially early on in his career. A guy you can see NBA defenses sag off until he can prove he can do a bit more on offense.

Brice Senasbaugh will be a future 6th man off the year and a guy we'll say should have gone earlier.

Hood-Schifino will struggle. Too inconsistent.

Just watched Podziemski highlights for the first time. I know a ton of people here love him. My hot take - he's not an NBA player.

Strangely he feels like a guy that is either a very good player or he's essentially out of the league. If he is athletic enough to hang on defense I could see him as some weirdo mix of Old Man Version Goran Dragic (he's a lefty and I just can't unsee the similarities in some of the scoring) with Luke Kennard and Donte Divencenzo... I would have liked to sneak a non-white guy in that mix but didn't sorry. Or he's Ty Jerome.

I think at 28 he is a worthy pick but wouldn't move up to get him. I think its a fine line for him and he's going to be a double/triple or just a strike out.

I don't think he's athletic enough on either side of the ball...

Nothing "safe" about this at all. This thread will just be another source for all the juvenile POS's of the board to Lord it over everyone else that they were right or beat others down that they were wrong.

In other words, I strongly approve.

As @Saint Cy of JFC said, you can change a lot of your fortunes by being a lights out distance shooter (and have a great floater). He has good indicators that he has those things. He also is a savant passer and plays the whole game.

But also agree with @Handlogten's Heros that he’s either really good or out of the league. I’m buying on the really good. Being a great basketball player is consistently and humorously underrated evidence that someone is good at basketball.

Like if he meets the criteria to ride the ride... he should be awesome. I think its a good bet in the 20s.

DAngelo Russell is the guy he played most like offensively. I think he has more off ball ability though which could given him a decent career even if he's not able to cut it as a creator at the NBA level.

He's just one of those guys where NBA length/athleticism could potentially just shut everything down which would end the Point Podz dream, but maybe he can do enough and clean up the lateral quickness to have a Pat Connaughton type career.

Its so tough to cover a guy with a jumper and a float game... so I think offensively he has a chance to be able to at least do some stuff. If that stuff isn't good enough I don't think the defense ever is good... so he will need to get it to a point where its at least not a tire fire.

Your description sounded as much like Podz as Jimmer.

When I watched Podz I got the same vibe... like... poor-man's Jimmer. Some of the shots he's getting in college, there's no way he gets those in the league vs the NBA athletes and length... some of the drives he has where he barely beats some future dentist or architect... I don't think he will be able to get past people in the NBA. And this is without me even mentioning his defense.... I just don't think this whole thing will work... AT ALL.

But then again... it's just my opinion and it's not like I know more than the NBA scouts and execs...

His statistical profile is similar to Dylan Windler who people on JF were high on but hasnt done anything in the NBA so far. Now I think he is a better NBA prospect than Windler was but I could see the hesistancy to draft him when especially there is some higher potential/high risk guys out there in this draft than in past ones.

Windler and Pod not much alike. Windler was supposed (or the hope was) to be like Mikal Bridges lite.

The notable thing about this was Keldon Johnson was still available.
Crazy. Just looked back at Windlers college stats. You would think this guy would be a surefire 3pt shooter. He had NBA height, length, even measured with a 38" vertical. Ja came out that same year so it gave his conference some legitimacy.

I remember being intrigued by him, but ultimately didn't really believe. Funny thing is that looking back on post about Windler I was talking SeattleJazzfan off from hyping him up too

Really? I was the opposite. Dude is way too upright and has a high dribble. I don't see him being any kind of on ball threat.
Still kind of surprised by just how bad Windler has been. Dude just had absolutely monstrous games at the NCAA level. Dude dropped 35-11 on Maryland w/ Bruno Fernando and Jalen Smith (not great NBA players by any means, but still guys who played in the league) during the NCAA Tournament!

A good reminder that sometimes absolutely nothing translates for these dudes, or their weaknesses are so weak that they arent even able to display their strengths.

Might be a good second draft guy tbh. Didn't he get hurt his rookie year or something. May still end up a good bench shooter type.

I think he has been hurt on/off for most of his career, but he hasnt had any realy glimpses. He was mediocre in summer league, he was mediocre in the g-league, and he has been bad whenever he has gotten a chance in the NBA. He also turns 27 in a few months and hasnt really had any growth due to not really playing anywhere. Usually the idea for 2nd draft guys is that they've been out of the league and actually developing somewhere.

G league numbers look fine to me. I wouldn’t expect a shooter type to have a ton of volume. As a minimum end of bench guy I’d take a flier on him. We may have a roster crunch so not something I’d prioritize for us.
