At some point, Trey has to be thought of as a "sunk cost." Dennis Lindsey, desperately needing a PG, took a chance by trading up for Trey, who we thought at the time was a true "pass-first" PG and not a scorer or combo guard like MCW or McCollum. In reality, all three have disappointed. Even Carter-Williams was supposedly on the trading block right after winning ROY. If you read articles from the draft, the Jazz reportedly wanted a big, but had heard the one they targeted would be off the board by 14. So they traded up and took who they thought was BPA AND filled a position of need. They screwed up. It happens.
No team hits on all their picks. It was a weak draft. Congrats to Milwaukee for taking a chance on a very raw player in Giannis. I think they win the draft by getting him at #15. Ironically, the pick the Jazz included to move up was used on Dieng, who is turning into a quality backup. Jazz paid a steep price for Burke. Fortunately, they were able to partially offset their huge mistake by buying a pick (Gobert) and getting extra picks from GS for this past draft and beyond. So they drafted their PGOTF one year later and picked up a solid wing in Hood. Gobert may or may not become a solid backup like Dieng. Imagine this team with Giannis, Dieng and a FA PG. Would have been >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> better than the garbage we've seen from Burke in 78 games.
Do we have other options right now, today? No. Jazz had their head up their arses by going to battle with only 2 PG's on the roster, including one who had stunk up 2 SL's and 70 games as a rookie with his poor shooting and porous defense. I'm no statistics major, but I'm pretty sure you could have viewed the 2014 preseason, when some teams barely go through the motions, as an outlier.
Trey is a bust; he has 2nd round value as the #9 pick. He'll never grow another inch; he won't be appreciably faster. He's not going to be a defensive stopper. At best, he's a player like Earl Watson: destined to bounce around the league as a backup. The sooner Lindsey realizes this and brings in the A.J. Price's of the world to help this team, the better.
Does having Trey as the starter hurt the team? Damn right it does! No one fears Trey's shots. This is liking watching Tinsley and Watson all over again. Teams are just playing off, defending the pass into the post and giving up the outside shot to Burke. That's one reason our inside game has gone to hell.
