2021 Free Agency

So when we play Denver, you're totally fine with Smart guarding 6'9" Aaron Gordon and Royce guarding 6'10" Michael Porter Jr?

I don't see any issues there. Nope, none at all.
In his defense, are we happy with Bojan?

For the playoffs, we will always get torched if we primarily play Conley, Don, Royce, Bojan and Rudy. That collection of perimeter defense is just too poor against good teams.

I don’t like Bojan, I will tell you that.

But I don’t know why you can’t start Smart if you can start Bogey. What does Bogey’s size actually add? Smart is better at Bogey than everything size should give you an advantage at defensively.

Smart grabs fewer rebounds... and against players significantly shorter, on average. That’s a start for you.... I’ll allow you to build the rest of the case.

Sure you could bring him off the bench, if you want to guarantee he's a one year rental. He wouldn't re-sign if he wouldn't start.
Then you find a replacement.
I’d swap JC for him in a heartbeat.

I noted your confident claim, though.... where you reached right into the mind of another person and just effortlessly pulled out perfectly clear data.

I think the Jazz would be wise to move off of either Clarkson or Bojan this year. It is fine to have one one-dimensional scorer in the rotation, but not two of them. Clarkson off the bench as a gunner is probably a better use of that one-dimensional player versus a starter. The challenge is that I do not know how we get equal value back for Bojan. The highly coveted "3 and D" guy is what we need, but I don't see any team trading that player for Bogey.

Smart averaged 3.5 rebounds per game to Bojan's 3.9.

Smart averaged 3x as many assists as Bojan (5.7 to 1.9).

K here's what I'd do if I'm Anthony Davis with Royce guarding me, and I'm Lebron with Smart guarding me:

Shoot over them because they're both nearly a foot shorter. And/or back them down because they're both a lot lighter. And laugh when they try to position themselves inside for a rebound.

You won't find me arguing Bojan is a good defender or rebounder, but I can not accept this Lollipop Guild sized lineup.

If Boston would take JC for Smart, I would do that for sure. Smart could play PG alongside Don when Conley is hurt or needs rest. If Hughes and Butler can provide the offense off the bench, it could be perfect.

I just don't see Boston doing that trade.

Smart is almost always guarding guys on the perimeter and the best players who shoot a lot. If he was standing on the perimeter doing nothing, he would probably grab more rebounds. The difference is marginal anyways. Exact same rebounds/36 for their careers.

More importantly Smart is significantly better at rotating behind the ball, defending bigs, and defending larger wings.

The offense is the question, not the defense. Marcus Smart plays wayyyy bigger than Bogey.

K now, I'd have to consider that despite my love for JC.

Marcus Smart has already done an admirable job against LeBron in his career. LBJ succeeds against everybody, but it's nice to have somebody who can kind of slow him down. Smart has done that before.

It isn't perfect, but I trust Smart against LeBron more than I do Bojan.

Maybe, maybe you can do that, but the issue is him *next to Royce.* It's not like Royce is playing at 4 because that's the best way to use him, there just isn't anyone else.
Honestly ideally, I'd rather trade Bojan for someone bigger that can play 4, so Royce can play 3.

You won’t find a bigger fan of smart around here than me. But your idea of starting him isn’t good.

I’d consider trading Bogie for him. But he ain’t starting alongside Conley and Mitchell.

I won’t disagree that it is a very small lineup. But Bogey doesn’t really provide any “big man” or “big wing” ability to the team defensively. Certainly not more than Smart. Bogey is good player but his defensive size is not the reason he’s out there.

The bigger question is the offensive end. Royce and Smart is not an appealing offensive duo.

I read in the Athletic that Boston is going to want a rotation player and at least one first round pick for Smart. Not sure we can afford to part with any more 1st round picks .

I wonder rotation player means. Starter? Part of the 8 man rotation? Specialist?

Considering Smart is an expiring, I wonder how much they can demand. What did Portland send for Covington last year?

I think they traded Ariza and two first round picks for Covington.
