What's new

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (democratic socialist) wins NY primary

Both sides response to political conflict is to move farther to the extremes. People really see this as a good thing? Wow.

I don't know anything about this district or the Republican opposition, but it seems like there is a fair chance the Dems are putting this seat at risk by nominating someone so far left that moderate Dems will go right.

It's amazing to me the amount of support socialism has with the youth. I guess that every generation needs to learn it's lessons the hard way.

I see it way more as amazing the level of socialist administration that is supported. We are and have been a social democracy for a very long time. We will not be giving up capitalism for a long time (not until robots take over nearly every job), but will continue fighting for balance. Obama's tax changes pushed that balance in the right direction as we saw effective tax rates on the ultra-rich rise. That is a really hard thing to accomplish. Liberals like to point things out like the 90% top tax rate but they seldom realize the effective tax rate was no different than, say, Reagan's reforms.

Trump, in all his stupidity, completely reversed Obama and probably then some.

The issue we have today is rightists coming to grips with the cognitive dissonance they have between hating wealth concentration and its seemingly plutocratic effect on the body politic, and the growth of the welfare state that has created an entitlement class amongst the millenials. "I worked my way through college, busted my *** off since childhood so why should I pay off their student loans so they can party 4 years of their lives away?". The opposite is true for leftists.

These two conflicting questions are hard for many to answer. I've said this before - I work with people making well into the $100,000 range who think that $100k (in Utah) is minimum for middle class - a ridiculous notion. They complain they'll never be able to retire and that the middle class is shrinking (another huge myth), but then spout off against welfare while simultaneously throwing out the typical "they promised me my social security [welfare]".

The centrist government that so many on here are pining for would ideally balance the two. But outright socialism? Get real; nobody in their right mind wants that.

I don't think 100k for middle class is outrageous. I'd say 80k household income, at a minimum, would be required to own a house in a middle class neighborhood, and provide a comfortable middle class life for your family. Houses in SLC gotta be close to 300k on average now.

I'm glad you agree that the robots will eventually take all of our jobs. I remember you being resistant to that notion in the past, citing that tech progress has historically created more jobs than it destroyed (true, but different situations).

And of course we're not replacing capitalism with a fully socialist system. That's ridiculous.

I would vote for that person.

Based off a simple graphic lol. Those issues are way to complex to really get a feel for it based off this.

What kind of justice reform? Support seniors how? How do we show solidarity with Puerto Rico? The list goes on and on...

Nah, it's simple. Is she related in any way to Trump, his ideology, or his followers? No? Then she gets my vote.

We follow you guys on a lot of things which is why our country is a significantly worse place than it was 20 odd years ago. Private prisons are parasitic organisations and should be abolished, medicare and housing should be human rights, gun control, restoring the glass-steagall and action of climate change are all things I would support. On that basis alone I would vote for this person, if they are genuine, its more than you'll get off anyone else.

Smh, don’t rush into another **** situation in your haste to flee a **** situation.

It’s not simple. Not even remotely

I don't think it's outrageous; I find the notion that you need to make that much to live a minimum lifestyle to be ridiculous. The biggest problem most couples making 80k-100k have is figuring out how to retire by 56 and make more in retirement than when working. I could live comfortably in the SLC metro on $70k or less with my 3 kids.

The biggest difference in comfort is the leeway to cut back. The difference between $60k and $80k may sound huge but all it really amounts to is a nicer vehicle, a larger house, more expensive food, and unnecessary utility bill increases. It's not really a much different lifestyle (and the latter may be more fulfilling anyway).

That was a very long time ago. We've been on the same page for years and have discussed it enough.

Good, great. What’s her plan for these? What’s the details? What replaces them?

To jut sign off with out really knowing a damn thing is dumb imo.

Saying stuff like this is cool and great. Sure.

But how?

I want criminal justice reform. Doesn’t mean I’ll want her version of it.

Also Medicare for all? Cool. Sounds nice. What happens to Medicaid? Will Part D be significantly reworked?

Federal jobs guarantee? What does she mean? A federal job for everyone? Federal government forcing companies to continue hiring? How is that enforced?

Blind signing off is foolish, shortsighted and reckless. As it would be with any policy platform

She's in NYC anyway. We can't vote for her. But really, I've voted for Misty Snow because of her badass name. I think most candidates would do a fine job.

True we can’t vote for her. But that wasn’t my point.

My point is blind support for any platform is stupid.

I think most candidates have proven they don’t do a fine job. Hence the **** ton of messes we have.

A failing post office. The wreck that is Medicare. Stupid criminal justice system. Immigration, defense spending...

Well if i was an american voter im pretty sure I know what the republicans stand for and i don't agree with any of it.

This really isn't that complicated, higher taxes for better services, I would also suggest spending less money on your military. Americans are under taxed by OECD standards, almost every other developed economy manages to have universal health cover, why is it impossible in america?

To be honest its really my problem to solve, we have enough of our own problems to think about here but as a general platform what this woman has put forward in my opinion is worthy of support.

We do live in arguably the most successful civilization the world has seen, so they couldn't have done too bad a job. Society progresses naturally in response to changing conditions. We just need to vote the ****ing nationalists out of government.

America is in decline.

What does that mean?

the american model of capitalism is unsustainable (this is a problem not only for you but for us because our elites are desperate to copy it) the Chinese will replace you as the global superpower by the middle of this century.

edit

I don't necessarily believe this is a good thing but i think it will happen.
