Best films of 2015

The dislike of Jurassic World is interesting. I hadn't heard that from people before. I'll bump it down a few notches on my list.

Pretty good year for movies

1. Ex Machina - lack of oscar nominations for this great film is pretty disturbing, though it was the best hands down
2. Fury Road - pretty much everything you want it to be and than some, best action movie in a long time.
3. Spotlight - perfect cast, great storytelling, was intrigued the whole way through
4/5 The Martian & Bridge of Spies - Ridley Scott & Steven Spielberg's best in years, great to see these guys still have it
6. The Revenant - thoroughly entertained, can't wait to see what Alejandro does next
7. Hateful Eight - love him or hate him QT is a master at what he does
8. Sicario - intense, memorable movie
9. Meru - my favorite documentary from last year
10. Creed - far exceeded expectations
 
I watched fury road for the 2nd time, this time with subtitles, and it was even better than the first time.

Just visually amazing. Stunning. The color tones constantly blow me away.
And with subtitles the story (admittedly the movie's main weakness) was better

IMO: Spotlight is almost the definition of average. It gets in, tells its story in a very "everything here is accurate to what happened" way and is so bare bones that you wonder why you didn't just watch a documentary instead. There's all kinds of weird decisions in the film that seem designed to keep the audience at a remove. Example: There's lots of stuff to suggest Ruffalo is having marriage problems and gets divorced during the film. Not actually depicted on camera.

Spotlight is this year's Foxcatcher. It has all the trappings of being a good movie, but it isn't.

Fury Road is exactly what it wants to be. The story is entirely secondary to the mission of the film.

I actually wish more action movies would go the Fury Road route. You're not watching most action films for the plot depth. Many times these films, particularly spy films, could be significantly compacted if they just straight said "There's a box. Everyone wants the box. This film is going to be about everyone trying to get that box." It's simple, clean, and you don't get bogged down in explaining a complex plot that no one will remember in a week anyway.

Fury Road is probably perfectly realized for exactly what it wanted to be. If the plot had been more complex I'm not sure it would matter in how you remember it. At the end of the day we would all still be yelling "witness him" at our friends that are about to make terrible dating decisions and declaring "I live, I die, I live again" while making stupid decisions playing video games. And yes, I'm 32 and those are my examples.

I enjoyed it's simple yet effective way of telling the story and I appreciated that it didn't over exaggerate the story like a lot of movies like to do nowadays. Felt authentic, helped by great performances specifically by Liev Schreiber and Michael Keaton who I thought were both perfectly cast. Maybe not oscar winning roles but pretty damn solid. Ruffalo's performance was kind of strange but as I understand it that's how the guy he portrayed acted in real life.

really enjoyed the slow build up when they start with 1 priest than finally they work their way up to 90(was that the final total? can't remember), that holy **** moment this story is a lot bigger than any of us realized. Director did a awesome job with the story, I thought.

It's one of those movies that was good, but I would never watch it again.
