Kanter got that contract precisely because everyone knew how much the cap was going to jump. Cy is right on this. Kanter's contract is ridiculous now, but once the rest of the league catches up, it won't be that bad. As far as assets go, Kanter would be a more valuable trade chip than Pleis and that crappy pick we got, even on his current contract.

A) 0.4 years on rookie contract and the right to match a 4 year minimax contract

B) 3 years of Kanter at minimax

All 30 GMs would take A over B.

The only argument is that the value of the "asset" (Kanter's performance) has gone up dramatically, dubious at best.

Factor in the timing of Kanter's demands. Jazz had to scramble to put a deal together and teams used that to their advantage to low ball us.

No, but I don't think it's as cut and dry as some people want to make it out to be. The dude just logged 6 minutes, 1 point and 2 rebounds in a game that could have clenched the WCF. If the Jazz make the playoffs and can't play Gordon Hayward (despite paying him $17 million per year) I'd be pretty upset and would worry about his actual trade value. And I'd feel the exact same way about Gobert and Favors if the Jazz extend them to big deals in the next two years. There's better ways to get bench production. Right now, Kanter makes 10x what Rudy does and almost twice what Derrick does. I know that the new TV money has contracts all upside down, but I still feel that it was right for Utah to cut bait on that one.

He is playing in a bad matchup. You are letting one series dictate an opinion when hr just came off a series where he had a huge impact.

He did have 2 rebounds in those six minutes of PT.

The fact that Kanter played only 6 minutes last night, and has seen scant playing time in the Golden State series (after receiving significant playing time in the San Antonio series)tells us that Kanter IS NOT a star or top tier player, nor is he perceived as one by his coaching staff. He is a good offensive SITUATION player, capable to making a significant contribution in some cases but also capable of being a significant detriment in others. He is most certainly not a MAX player and is not worth what it would have required the Jazz to pay him to retain him, particularly give the opportunity cost to the Jazz as they are trying to build their roster by signing their younger core and adding veteran talent. The Jazz FO did the right thing getting rid of him. We are better off, and he is happier, although how long he remains happy being a bit role player off the bench remains to be seen. I'd expect him to start making rumblings of discontent at some point, and OKC will face a similar dilemma with him as we did. OKC will not be his last stop.
