Following potential 2013 draftees

The knock on Shabazz isn't the off-court stuff, it's that he didn't dominate physically at the college level and that he didn't live up to the hype that might have been fueled a bit by being older and more developed than other HS kids. He also didn't shoot all that well and had one of the lowest assist rates in the NCAAs. He's also not super quick or defensive minded for a 6'6" guy who is supposed to play SF at the next level and maybe too slow to guard NBA SGs who are the same size/length, but quicker.

If all this is true, that makes him more of a role player than an impact player. If he can develop the range and consistency on his jumper, then he can play off that and be like a Joe Johnson with more drive. He still has to prove he can do that though. There's a bit of risk there that he might turn out to be more like Magette, and that's why he'll probably go mid-late lottery.

That's EXACTLY what I said at the beginning of the year.

I don't want to go through all these posts but whats the census on Rudy Gobert? Jazz have worked him out and he could be a great 3rd big. The NBA is still a big man's game and he definitely clogs up the middle. Could maybe turn into a poor man Hibbert.

I think he would be great selection at #21. Maybe you stash him in Europe for a few years.

Big, well coordinated, decent hands, 7'9" wing-span. Able to catch and finish. Good timing on defense. Slower than ideal footspeed may be holding him back.

I agree he would be great at #21 but I highly doubt he gets to 21. I would be shocked if Atlanta didn't take him with one of their two consecutive picks. Gobert has stated he wants to come to the NBA next year so I don't know how a team can keep him from coming over. Man if the Jazz could get Bazz and Gobert in this draft it would be a great draft in my opinion.

He's a Ferrari without wheels.

I agree. I would be ok with the Jazz taking Gobert at 14 if they can get Shroeder or Larkin at 21.

Context. 'Bazz averaged 18ppg in one of the most awful plowhorse offenses in the nation. Many of us who had followed him through HS were so let down by his announcement to play for Ben Howland (R.I.P.).

How many freshman average better than 18ppg?
How many UCLA players score like that? (None)

Maybe you're right, but context..

The thing I keep listening for when people say stuff about players is that: This player or that player is like such and such a player but not as athletic... Like Shane Larkin is a poor mans Tony Parker, or Otto Porter is a less athletic Scottie Pippen/Gerald Wallace etc... well maybe sometimes that athleticsim or height is the key thing that made those players great. If Michael Jordan didn't have Michael Jordan athleticism he would be Aaron Afflalo or Brandon Roy. If Chris Paul and Tony Parker weren't so quick and athletic they would be Jameer Nelson (who i think Burke will be like).

Otto Porter was not highly recruited who had a great Sophomore year on a mediocre team. Wesley Johnson was a 23 yr old stud on Syracuse who turned out to be great in college because he was 3 years older than his competition. How many sub 6' pg's much less 5'10" pgs are there that have been great.... Chris Paul and who? For every CP3 there are a thousand guys who never make it or are career back ups.

I would rather risk #14 on a Schroeder who has the chance to hit big because he has the NBA skill that sets him apart than thinking I can turn evolution on its head with Larkin. I would rather draft Len or Adams over Noel, or Plumlee because history does not smile on 206 lb skinny big men or 23 year old serniors versus the body and skill sets of Len/Adams.

Draft the guys that have the skills and size to fill into a greater version of themselves is my point: That is for each position:

Len, Adams, Nogeira and maybe Gobert/Dieng - C
Bennett, Zeller, Grant Jarrett, Carmichael, Tony Mitchel - PF
Saric, Bullock, Snell have more upside than Porter/Bazz - SF
Pope, McCollum, Karasev, Franklin- SG
Schroeder, MCW, McCollum- PG
