I'm starting to think the Jazz have a trade-up opportunity on the table involving Boris Diaw's contract and the #24 pick. Could be with Charlotte or Detroit. It explains why the Jazz are getting Mitchell to work out with them and why they interviewed Zach Collins at the Combine.

Detroit in particular wants to clean house and needs cap relief.

If the Jazz really did make a promise to DJ Wilson, it would be with the 30th pick, not 24.

It doesn't make any sense. Locke has been floating Diaw as a trade piece because he's not guaranteed, but it doesn't make sense as a draft-day piece, unless you are taking a contract those teams want to clear. And we are not in position to take such contracts that those teams want to clear - are we taking Boban from Detroit back? Or Bellineli? Or Lamb? We cannot afford to pay 5th big or 6th wing 7-8 million going forward. We need this money to pay Hayward, Hill and INgles. The only way I see Diaw being tradable piece on draft night is if the other team is sending a player of value! Like a Bledsoe or Dragic to make the salaries work as a salary filler.

Here is one of DJ Wilson's better games of the year. Has some nice activity early finding holes in the D on cuts and putbacks, but then gets loose on Isaac Haas. Was kind of down on it early when I was watching because they were guarding Wilson with Swanigan/Haas and Wilson wasnt able to really do anything, but then Michigan adjusted later in the 1st and put him in more pick n pops where he could use his shooting and athletic advantage over Haas. Earlier in the half though he had some offensive miscues when guarded by more athletic defenders. Is skilled enough to score on NBA defense where he will have more athletic players closing on him and isnt guarded by a slow giant like Haas? After his scoring burst on Haas, they took Haas out and he was guarded by Swanigan and unable to make anything happen (think he only attempted 1 3 after that and missed). Even at one point early Wilson gets the ball with a 6' PG guarding him on the baseline and opts for a jump shot instead of trying to back him down. I dont know if he can exploit mismatches all that well unless they are wildly exaggerated like Haas trying to guard him on the perimeter.

Defensively he was getting worked in the post by Swanigan/Haas, but he fought and was able to make some nice plays every now and then. The effort was there, even blocked Haas at one point, but will obviously be a target for strong PF's to bully much likes Lyles is, but he has more recovery ability than Lyles.

Michigan plays him almost exactly like the Jazz try to play Lyles though, mostly on the perimeter all game, either parked in the corner or setting high ball screens at the top of the 3pt line. Pretty easy to project his fit in Utah's system.

Also, with Frank Jackson being out until July, he could conceivably fall to #42, which would be a great value.

They only have one bad contract and that is Jon Leuer (3 years 30 million still left) and maybe tobias Harris (2 years 31 million)

I dont think reggie Jackson is a bad contract as they have not PG if he is traded.

Ehh, a trade doesnt have to be on the table for them to get a workout. All a workout says is that Mitchell's camp likes the Utah fit and would be pleased if Utah drafted him.

OK, let me put it like this - we will be giving around 60M of salary to the 3 players - Hill, Hayward, Ingles and Diaw is one of the few ways for us to clean salary. If we are trading Diaw for actual salary coming back, we better be getting a replacement for one of those 3 players. I think PG makes most sense. Give me some 3 way trade that would make sense as an example. What are you thinking about?

That's pretty poor logic, considering Mitchell is nowhere near the Jazz's draft range. There has to be something that makes this workout relevant to Mitchell. Otherwise he wouldn't do it.

You think the Jazz are going to tell Mitchell's agent about what deals they have on the table? That's even poorer logic.

The Jazz call the agent and say "We want a workout. We like Mitchell and might want to trade up to get him if we like him enough/can find a window". The agent only says yes if he likes the fit and likes that scenario. The relevancy is they like the fit, point blank. Not a mystery to see why since Utah is known for defense and we have a need for what Mitchell can provide, both at the 1 and 2.

What is the thing that you want in return for Diaw's contract. Give examples. I'm almost certian none make sense... It has to involve the Jazz not getting any salary back, otherwise it defeats the purpose. We need this space more than we need middling assets and 5th-6th wing or big for 7-8M salary.

Yeah he keeps saying that is our most valuable non-Gobert asset which is completely wrong. I also don't see us acquiring a PG before July 1. I think Hill is plan A and trading for Rubio or Bledsoe would take Hill off the table in addition to costing us some assets. I think a trade is plan B... I'm hoping Hayward trusts DL enough in his negotiations that he would sign if we had a plan in place to replace Hill should he bail. Making a play before July 1 might not net the most ideal result for us long term... just getting someone before July 1 to say to Hayward "we got someone" seems kind of short-sighted. Unless they know they can't get Hill back.

If we move up I could see us packaging 24 and the OKC pick or Lyles and 24 though I'm not sure that gets you to Mitchell's range.
