Following Potential 2025 Draftees

Does anybody remember the 2020 draft enough to remember how Tyrese Haliburton dropped to 12?

I did not pay attention to the draft much at that time, so I really don't remember. I'm going back through some of his college numbers and film, and he definitely pops. It's easy to say in retrospect, I understand, but I'm curious what people were saying at the time. Was it just a COVID thing that nobody trusted any of the data at the time?
The Warriors were heavily considering take him at 2. The 2020 draft was weird because of Covid affecting things.

I guess when he was drafted skinny frames were still a big negative and guys like him and SGA fell. SGA also had quite awesome college numbers but found himself outside the top 10.

You could get away with lot more defensively, so being strong and able to overpower bullies was more important. Now its more about length and perimeter play.. both defensively and offensively.

KD was also questionned when he was drafted despite being the best college player of all time. People said he will be a bust because he cant bench press enough.
To me this embodies Tre Johnson. Not strong can’t get to the hoop and so on.

Funny looking shot and not athletic.

Is there anyone in this draft that was young, put up great numbers, looked impactful on film, but is being overlooked because of something unquantifiable like funny looking shot/doesn't look athletic?

My response would be Thomas Sorber. He put up great numbers as a Freshman, looks like an extremely impactful defender on film, and is a good passer for a center. The negatives I hear for him seem superficial.

Player I like w/bad form = That’s how he will improve.

Player I don’t like w/bad form = That’s why he won’t improve

I'm fairly lowish on Ace, but his terrible shooting form on like 20% of his shots seems pretty fixable and makes me think he'll be a better shooter in the NBA than he was in college.

He's not really great at any one thing and he had foot surgery at 260 lbs. A bit short for a 5, but makes up for it with unreal length. He's not very athletic. He reminds me a lot of a downgraded Wendell Carter JR. I just think there are far better options at teh 5 in this draft, but he's a first round quality type player.

The other one is probably Jase. It felt like he was getting mocked in the top 10 consistently until he measured short. Does anybody have his numbers broken down to after he started?

CMB might be another one, but I think that is more legit. In the NBA you need to be able to shoot.

But the real answer is Hansen Yang. He's getting overlooked because of race and where he played.

I'm just thinking out loud here. I'm not saying I would consider Sorber at 5, just trying to learn from the past, even though I realize there might not be a lesson there.

The short and unathletic are both the type of things that might drop a guy unnecessarily. Like you said, the height can be overcome by having insane length and he had 10reb/3ast/2blk/2stl which shows that he's functionally able to do what he needs to on the court.

Kas's defense/athleticism concerns are real IMO, but he gets so much flak for his inability to create despite being one of the best creators (for himself and teammates) in the draft.

Jase is underrated IMO, and that has a lot to do with his small role due to upperclassmen on his team. Very clearly a guy who would have performed in bigger role, question is how big of a role and how well....but he was limited for sure.

VJ could have the same thing as Jase as far as role goes. He played on a very poorly constructed team that could have effected his role negatively, but unlike Jase he wasn't good at the self creation stuff when he did do it.

No, at the 5 as in centers, not the 5th pick.

I was thinking of Kas as well, but Haliburton had 2.5st/36 vs Kas has 1. I don't know what Haliburton's numbers were at the combine, but he had real functional athleticism based on his numbers. Haliburton also was much less turnover prone than Kas making his case as a lead ball handler better.

Yeah, I don't love the Hali comparison because his ability to not turnover the ball is elite and a big part of his value....but I'd say Kas's actual scoring creation itself is underrated. For as much credit as we give Fears/Tre/Ace, Kas was just better and especially in the half court.

The high turnovers is not a great indicator for Kas, I'll admit that, but I do consider him to be a smart + high motor player. A lot of my comparisons for him are smarter + high motor version of creator/playmaker that really needs those things. Initial guy I thought of earlier in the year was DLO w/IQ. Been thinking lately that he's kind of like Keyonte with toughness+IQ+motor.

If Kas ends up as a star, people are going to ignore turnovers for young guys even more than they do now.
