Ideal Lineup (Based on everything up to now)

I like the majority of what you said but I would have Hayward as the SG and move Burks to the PG. I think Burks can be a PG in this league. He will make mistakes but he could be very good if Corbin unleashes him. One thing I really notice, Hayward is not a SF, he is a shooting guard. He can play the SF against certain teams but not against bigger opponents.

I am done with CJ. I have been patient for too long. I don't care if he goes off for 30 pts. in the next game. I am just sick of his inconsistency. Bell should NOT start!!! He was a borderline starter in his prime. He is more of a specialists than a starter. Now that he is old he can't defend and rarely is productive on the offensive end.

I am done with Harris too. If I hear one more time how quick he is I think I am going to go nuts!!! The guy has no clue how to run an offense. It is time either AJ or Millsap goes the Jazz do not need both. I prefer Millsap over AJ so let's see if the Jazz can make a deal for an actual SF and picks.

I am not jumping on the Burks bandwagon. I could care less if he has some bad games, he needs to play because we don't know what we have. I watched him play in college and the first thing I thought was this kid could play PG. He certainly couldn't do much worse than Watson or Harris.

Not on the Burks bandwagon yet. But I am on the youth bandwagon. If we are going to lose (we are going to lose a lot this season) might as well see what we have in the young guys and bench or trade the guys that we know are not good enough. Harris, Bell and Jefferson are not going to be with this team long term. So there is no reason for them to play more than spot minutes.

Well said.

The Jazz want to rebuild while staying competitive. That is tough to do.

Rebuilding teams trade their veterans for younger players with more potential to teams that are competitive now and need extra pieces.

Just my opinion... but Harris, Jefferson and Bell look expendable. Millsap is still young and has the kind of work ethic you want to teach to these guys. It will make this year ugly (can it get any uglier?), but the future will be bright.

If the Jazz are rebuilding, then rebuild!!!

Solid? Hayward was abysmal. He can't guard anybody. He had guys going right around him routinely. Offensively Hayward is really good. Defensively in the last 2 games Hayward has been the worst defender on the team. Can't stay between his man and the hoop, and does not seem to understand how to force players baseline.

Dude he is a young player. No one excepts someone out of college to be a lockout defender. That's why young teams like the Kings, T-Wolves and Pistons have plenty of offense but no defense. We currently have terrible offense and terrible defense. Let be like the young teams who develop players on the offense end first. This is what OKC said and then they traded for Perkins and got a stud in Ibaka. Hayward will get better as the year goes on.

Nerd fact of the day: with 13 players on the roster, there are actually 1287 different lineups that Ty could choose from. ( 1287=13!/(5!8!) )

Based on how bad our defense has been, I think this is how we should try it.

Burks
Hayward
Howard
Favors
Kanter

I was tempted to switch Evans for Howard, but I want players that will try, and that want to be on the floor.
If these players don't start, I want them to get "starter" minutes. 30 per night.

Guitaro, that would quickly solve the energy shortage on the Jazz... Didn't see any of the Denver game, but against the Lakers Watson was way too slow. I have always liked Tinsley's game when he was in Indiana. Hayward may be suffering from CJ disease; so bulked up it's slowed him down. He played good D last year, at least at SG...

I have always been in favor of starting Favors at the center position (no pun intended).
At the same time, everyone on this board his to agree with starting Millsap.
Al Jefferson just can not keep it going without a little relief from a different scorer.
We also know that we want Favors to start as well.
So why the hell not bring Big Al off of the bench?
Is it because we're saving face on the big contract we're paying him?
We were paying AK this much, and tried him off the bench as well.

really good post, but CJ "Still pretty young but needs time" are you kidding me bro?

How long has he been in the league?

It's a far cry from Abysmal to lockdown. Hayward, so far this year, has been the worst wing defender on the team. And that is saying something with this team. I hope he gets it. He was not this bad last year. But it is troubling that he can't stay close to his man. Or force his man the direction the team wants.

No we don't.

In the first two games, Jefferson + Favors have started the game and worked well together (18-17 Laker lead at the end of Q1; 10-6 lead vs. Denver before Favors drew two sophomoric fouls quickly).

In the Denver game, Millsap came in alongside Jefferson, and ALL of the points scored by Denver were from Nene, free throws, layups, driving jump shots, or dunks. Millsap held serve until Kanter came in for AJ, and then Lawson scored several points (partly due to Watson).

In other words, AJ doesn't need relief from a different scorer; he needs more relief from a defender--which Favors satisfies the best among the three most likely options.

Al Jefferson just can not keep it going without a little relief from a different scorer.
We also know that we want Favors to start as well.

Because Favors + Jefferson is probably the best 4-5 combination, and because Millsap is a bit short against most starting bigs.

If you're gonna bench Jefferson, substitute Millsap. I do agree that Millsap deserves to start over AJ (if the lineup makes sense). The explanation to Jefferson would be that he's underperforming (example: rebounds vs. DEN).

Need to factor in positions

Oh, you want to make things complicated, do you?

I'm up for the challenge. Let's say the Jazz have 3 PG (Harris, Tinsley, Watson), 5 "Wings" (Bell, Burks, Hayward, Howard, and Miles), and 5 "Bigs" (Evans, Favors, Jefferson, Kanter, and Millsap), and that Corbin has to pick 1 PG, 2 Wings, and 2 Bigs for each lineup.

In that case, he has exactly 300 different lineups he can choose from. ( 300 = (3 choose 1) * (5 choose 2) * (5 choose 2) , where "a choose b" = a!/(b!(a-b)!) )

One could make things even more complicated, by saying for example Evans can play SF or PF, but not SG or C. In that case you get only 210 different lineups. (Not going to show work for this one unless anyone really cares.)

Boo-yah!

More of this "he isn`t the exact height of the opposing player, so he must suck" garbage. Inserting Millsap for either Favors or Al would be an upgrade. Unless your not watching the games.

I think you are the one missing the games. As soon as Millsap comes in for Favors the opponents 4/5 goes off on offense. Gasol and then Nene. Nene took over the game as soon as Favors picked up his 2nd foul. Favors needs to learn to play defense without fouling and Millsap and Jefferson need to stay off the floor at the same time. I don't care if Millsap or Jefferson start but they need to be the subs for each other.
