Jazz vs. Mavs in round one

The Jazz's shooters of the past, like Ingles and Niang, could be neutralized by switching defense that stifles the Jazz's ball movement. Those guys both had a bad series against the Clippers once the Clippers went small. That's what the Jazz have been contending with.
And it's what the jazz never addressed. The most glaring weakness everyone could see we did nothing about it. Perimeter D and dealing with small ball switching defense.

The hope was that Rudy Gay would be able to attack a switch, but he hasn't moved well enough or been consistent enough to keep on the floor. Eric Paschall is a guy who can attack from about 12 feet and in. He can also make passes out of the short roll, so it wouldn't surprise me if he got some time in the series. The problem with Paschall is that he doesn't rebound much, and the Mavs have been very guard-centric, meaning that Paschall might have to guard Brunson or Dinwiddie on some possessions.

What the Jazz need is a wing with some size/length/athleticism who can guard switches, make 3s and attack offensively. That's a very valuable player in this league. You see the Jazz chose to close yesterday with Royce, and you saw what happened when he put the ball down and attacked the paint. Fortunately, he got his own rebound and got an open look to knock down the dagger 3. Mavs might back off of him and ask him to prove he can do it consistently though.

House scored a couple buckets, plus a corner 3. I'd like to see him get more minutes going forward. I think Quin trusts Royce to make good decisions under pressure because he's been there before. Unless Royce is getting toasted defensively, I think he'll continue to get minutes with the closing lineup.

To say Ingles and Niang were both bad in the Clippers series is simply not true. Ingles was absolutely terrific and Niang was awful. Joe averaged 14 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds on 54% shooting and 46% from 3. Niang on the other hand averaged less than 1 point a game and shot 15% from the field and 10% from 3. Ingles was one of our best players in that series and Niang was by far our worst.

The NBA just announced that game 5 will be Monday at 7:30 MT on TNT.

So, should we magically end up beating the Mavs, the Pelicans or a Booker-less Suns might be waiting.

This is the ultimate tragedy of this team. Things broke in their favor last year in terms of matchups and stars being out, but we had our own health issues. This year, they are breaking in the Jazz’s favor somewhat again, but this year for whatever reason this team just can’t get out of their heads and out of their own way.

And they honestly just can’t guard. A lot of that is personnel, but a lot of it is confidence and effort.
