Keyonte George Hype & Appreciation Thread

Who's the awful defender on any of the current contenders?

It was Luka with the Mavs - and it mattered massively.
Kyrie on the Mavs
Garland on the Cavs
Brunson on the Knicks
Murray on the Nuggets
Morant on the Grizzlies
Pritchard on the Celtics

Not saying these guys are as bad as Keyonte currently is, but there isnt any reason why Keyonte cant improve. It's basically unheard of for a team to not have at least one guard on the roster who doesnt have to be hid on defense.

Yep, the league is prioritizing offense even more than ever, even with all the talk of 3andDs. Look at the all-star teams- some MAY be decent defensively, in a 'by the way' sort of mattering, but it only really matters if you're a center.

And like I said, I dont think Keyonte is ultimately a starter, so he doesnt have to be on the court to end games or out there guarding the best players.

Not that defense isnt important, but I feel like we are being a bit crazy when we write off Keyonte just because he's been a bad defender his first two years. There are plenty of examples of guards with similar issues who improved enough.

How many all nba defensive teams has steph curry been a part of?

He would have to have that lightbulb moment first. And it hasn't happened yet. And after that he has to work really, really hard at it - and maybe then in a couple of years that doesn't hold him back.

But the point was if his defense matters more or less. And on a contending team it matters more. Now? Whatever.

Imagine that something truly freaky happens and this Jazz team is in the Finals. Lauri is swatting everything in sight, Collins is playing like a man possessed, Collier is applying ball pressure like you've never seen before. What would any opponent do? They would hunt Keyonte every single possession. They would drop 80 on him. They would be full court hounding him if he tries to bring up the ball.

It would matter more.

OKC saw that they had a hole. What did they do? They shipped Giddey without any regret for Caruso.

And sure, those players listed are usually the weakest link on their own teams. Nowhere as glaringly obvious as Keyonte is. They are also all almost top20 offensive players in the league - which Keyonte is far away from being. And it matters. If the Cavs and Celtics meet in the East finals, you can bet Mazzulla is thinking ways of exposing Garland on every possession.

So we made the Finals with Keyonte? Sounds good

I think Garland is his best track with a decent likelihood.

DG:
6'1", 192 lbs

KG:
6'4", 185 lbs

So Keyonte has a few inches on him, but is slighter.

Keyonte out-stat-ed him in their comparative rookie seasons in fewer minutes. Garland doesn't really seem to do anything on the court that seems out of reach of Keyonte if his D continues to steadily improve, especially given his extra length.
Dang wasn’t he around 215 lb’s? In college? Kid lost mad weight

Don’t forget they also had Kyrie, so two of the worst defenders in the league.

Key will end up having a much better career than Giddey

Garland had exceptionally good development and if Key got to the same level I’d also call that exceptional development from where he is. No shame in having a more typical development and that will still result in him being a decent player.

According to Locke Keyonte has been in Utah all summer and is first guy in/last guy out kind of mentality.
The guy who used to be the assistant to the traveling secretary for the Yankees did this and almost landed the job of assistant to the general manager. It’s not a bad strategy, as long as you don’t screw it up.

I will say I am still firmly on the Keyonte George believer Island. I don’t know why but I just have a feeling he’s going to be really good for a long time he’s only 21 years old and the flashes are there if he can put the ball in the hoop with any sort of consistency he is atleast a sixth man of the year level player

Because we play more than 5 guys? Keyonte isn't going anywhere.

Drafting a guy you hope is your 6th man gunner off the bench when you already have a prospect you hoped would be your 6th man gunner off the bench feels like a pretty strong signal.

Both guys are 6'3" SGs with mediocre wingspans, they're too small to be anything but gunners off the bench without massive and unlikely passing development.

Guards do take longer to get going. Garland was pretty bad his first 2 years. Only really took off his third year. The raw FG% looks pretty bad but the TS% is 53.9% which is below average but not horribly so.

As much there's work to be done on defense, he could use some work on shooting efficiency

You know, there a reason why some players gets minutes despite minutes limitations, they help their team get buckets. But If you're gonna struggle to reach 40% fg and 35% fg3...
