"monkey it up" racist or not?

Why even talking about race? Why is it an issue now? The media over the last few years yanking everyone's chain?

Small minded stuff, not even worth discussing.

I'll be the first to say that I feel that blacks often cry racism when none is present but this feels to have strong racial overtones to me.

If a Republican in Florida loses to a Democratic Socialist he will have monkeyed it up. Should be an easy victory. Race has nothing to do with it.

I'm not familiar with this term. When is it used?

When you're comparing black people to monkies. It's not about race tho. It's about monkey culture.

I knew the part about comparing black people to monkeys. But in what context does someone say that something is being monkeyed up? In a similar fashion to being f'ed up? In that case, I cannot imagine it is anything other than a racial remark.

The Republican candidate for governor of Florida told his constituents not to monkey up the election, or something like that. The Democratic candidate happens to be black. A freak out moment is apparently necessary.

If the Democratic candidate had been white would this comment have mattered? As far as I can tell he was talking to and about his own voters, not about his opponent.

Have you heard that expression before? I love how you tried to use it casually. Like it's something people use every day.

'Don't monkey this election up by voting for the black guy' is about as loud as dog whistles get. Give me a ****ing break guys.

I read the twitter thread Zombie posted. It clarified the term for me, unless the Texan was just slinging bull. But many others in the thread seem to confirm what it meant to use the term. So, if the Republican candidate was telling Florida voters not to "monkey up the election", I don't see how that can mean anything other then "don't elect a black man governor of Florida". I've never heard the term used here in New England. Seems pretty blatant after reading the derivation...

I watched the clip. I feel it was a bad choice of words not meant to have racial overtones, but can see how people see it differently too.

It sounds like a clumsy derivative of statements I have heard many times before. I wasn't attempting to use it casually. I was simply relating what I heard had been said. It may be that he meant it as a racist statement (i don't know anything about this candidate} but it didn't sound like one to me. If he really was trying to talk to racist voters using some sort of secret code (which is actually not a secret at all to people from the South) then he is a bonehead of epic proportions.
