Official Game Thread--12/30/2010: Utah at Portland 8pm MT...FSR-UT/KFNZ

Because he wasn't able to make quick decisive moves or find the open man last night.
When Al would post-up on the left block, he would take 2 dribbles and then Portland would run Andre Miller (guarding Bell) at him from across the court. Not only was Al late recognizing it, but he would pass the ball to the top of the key to Millsap rather than cross-court to Bell who was open, allowing Portland to recovering and forcing the Jazz to go one-on-one with the shotclock winding down.

Good grief.

Wesley Matthews had 30 points---our defense on him that is to put either Raja Bell or Deron Williams on him simply on him didn't work. I would have put Hayward on him. Also in regards to Hayward would like to see some plays run specifically for him where he is not simply on the baseline shooting 2s or 3s or running back and forth along the baseline. The plays run for him would involve him posting up (as the 2 guard in the offensive set---that means he would have to be playing with for example jefferson, millsap, kirilenko and williams) and would therefore be playing the opposing 2 guard. Think of the Lakers game where he had 26 points he was extremely successful posting up on the block and with the use of shot fakes got 6-8 points. Right now i see him cutting somewhat aimlessly through the lane and very rarely is the ball gotten to him. Lastly on Hayward---i believe he is a competitor---that is, he is tough-minded. However he needs to understand at the NBA level the benefits of drawing and making contact with the defender---you get to the line and get free throws. I think right now he is not seeking out contact from his defender and you have to be able to do that at the NBA level.

Your drugs must be really good...
When Al got doubled, the blazers packed it in. Bell was NOT cutting to the hoop. Bell just stood out at the 3pt line and couldn't knock down shots. Sometimes Bell would get the ball and do nothing with it.
The jazz offense was pretty stagnant. Part of it is that Jeff was slow to recognize the double, but nobody was cutting or moving on a lot of those and nobody burned the blazers from the outside for packing it in.

I think Hayward did a lot of good things tonight. He was very agressive on the boards and on defense. Problem is, the refs decided to call fouls on him whenever possible.
It's the same old thing. Jazz have a rookie who plays hard, the refs chain him with crazy fouls. It happend to Wes last year too. But I guess not being a rookie anymore and going to a new team means he isn't foul-happy anymore.

It's the same with Evans. The last 2 games, he has gotten some time, and if he does anything, the whistle blows.

There is something to be said for playing with confidence.

The blazers played with major confidence last night. The were after it, and you could see on their faces that they were having fun and were excited to go even harder.
Two nights ago they got BADLY blown out by Denver, who was without Melo.

How is this explained? Why did the blazers give the jazz such a hard time, but totally quit against Denver?
Sometimes a team has confidence against another team and believes they can win. They play differently.

The Blazers played beautiful basketball. Nice cuts, good defense, for the most part, and key shots. They beat us at our own game.

Al Jefferson would post up on the left block. Andre Miller would routinely leave Bell from the right wing and run across the baseline to double him. You rarely see double down on the block like that because most post-players can see it from a mile away. Poor weakside spacing yes, but mainly slow recogniziton by Al prevented us from taking advantage of our 3-on-2 advantage on the weakside. Al's worked hard to significantly improved his passing through 33 games which is a good sign but last night wasn't a good one for him.
