Poll: Should the Jazz Match Hayward's $15.75 a year/4 year Contract?

Should They Match?

Anyone who thinks the Jazz will be hurt financially by this and wont have any space in the coming years are ignorant and don't know what they're talking about.
Anybody who thinks that overpaying a guy that much won't hurt is naïve. This roster is not good enough. Even with internal improvement and other factors it's not good enough. Paying a role player that much money can restrict the ability of a team to improve. At some point during this contract the Jazz will be up against the cap. And if he's nothing but what he was last year then his contract could be what prevents them from making a move that improves them significantly. Even though they look good now does not mean it will stay that way.

Don't match. What is this max buying us?
Are we going to the finals? No.
Are we getting into the 2nd round? No.
Are we making the playoffs? No.
Will he get us high lottery picks? Hell no.
.
Ok, but we are developing into a better team with Hayward. In 4 years, our young talent is going to develop into a solid veteran team that can begin to challenge for a title ... and Hayward will be right there to lead them ... NOT. The Jazz will not be able to give Hayward another max contract after this, so he will walk then.
.
So I ask again, what is this max buying us?

The argument is that Hayward will fetch more in a trade than the cap space saved plus the improved draft pick (from losing Hayward).

But to say that the Jazz wouldn't have been a sh*t team if they had a player like Love, Hardin, etc. is disingenuous. .
reading comprehension fail.
I did not say that.
Just that Jazz "would not have sucked that hard".
But they would still have been in the ****ty class.

I actually agree with this. If we have the ability to give Hayward another huge deal in four years, then something has gone terribly wrong. And it doesn't matter. This is buying four years of worse draft picks.

They should have extended him last year. I see him having a major improvement from last season. If that improvement benefits Charlotte, a lot of you are going to eat your words. It was the exact same with Matthews. Everyone was saying he wasn't worth the offer extended. Hindsight is a bitch.

So I will eat crow. I'd rather be wrong for a missed opportunity than suffer 4 years of buyer's remorse.

have to match.its a necessity with the current situation. the time to get a better contract with Hayward was last year, but with the whole team hating Corbin,he would have waited till Corbin was long gone first. Hayward will be way better now.

we will match according to a comment on another website but will take full three days (Adrian Wojnarowski: Jazz will match Gordon Hayward's $63M sheet, but wouldn't be a surprise to see them take full 3 days to notify Hornets, sources tell Yahoo. Twitter @WojYahooNBA

The Jazz can pay him easily but money is not the problem here.

This guy simply does not deserve $16m/year. If you match the Hornets' offer now, you're doomed to suffer from short, mid and long-term complications.

What's the point of matching?
You can't expect him to play like a $16m guy, you can't trade him, you can't do nothing. All you do is committing your future to mediocrity while the Jazz already have enough young talent with huge balls, winning mentality.

You obviously have no clue about how the salary cap works and market price...

The war is coming!

You obviously have no clue about how the salary cap works and market price...
A lot of people are saying this, but I'm not sure they understand the difference between short-run market price and long-run market price/short- and long-run value.

Has nothing to do with right side. I'm still waiting to see something smart from the anti-Hayward front.

What exactly would you do with the capspace that stays open by letting Hayward walk?

I just look at his '17 and '18 outs and I don't see a lot of valuable free agents then unless the SoBe-Mafia hands out some shady 3 years max deals and Derrick Rose has some weird reincarnation.
This year's free agency is a freak accident that none saw coming. Through a lot of unforeseen circumstances you had extra players and others becoming players towards end of the season.

So feel free to convince me what exactly you would do with the Jazz capspace when you let Gordon walk.

For me it comes down to one thing, yes the Jazz can afford to pay Hayward, yes there is a cap minimum limit that needs to be met, yes the Jazz will miss some of the things Hayward does, but the one glaring problem I have with giving Hayward the max is he hasn't earned it. You do not overpay for anything if you are smart.

I lived in CA during the last housing madness 2004-2005, people were bidding against each other for housing paying thousands of $$$$ more than a house was worth. Guess what happened the recession and then people who had paid these crazy prices were under water and couldn't get rid of their houses. This is how Jazz fans are going to feel if they give Hayward the Max and he plays like he has or even worse continues to get worse as a shooter. He is going to be the same target he was before when he said he wasn't getting the same shots and that was why he struggled. I am certain that the Jazz are going to go against conventional wisdom and give Hayward the max. I can only imagine how miserable Hayward is going to be when he starts slowly again and starts clanking shots.

I hope I am wrong and Quin works his magic and Hayward becomes the player many people think he is. However, it won't change my belief that an organization should never pay a player Max money on potential. It is time for Gordon to step up and play at the level he wants to get paid.

Free agents aren't the only thing capspace can be used for. It can also be used to absorb bad contracts, helps a team in need of capspace and obtain players or draft picks we would otherwise have no way of receiving.

But I'm sure you already knew that.
