Social media and players

This feels like a response to Lebron James calling out fans for burning IT's jersey when he played the day after his sister died...

The only thing that bugged me was that fan had to be an extreme outlier. It is like responding to some moron in the comments section of yahoo.

I love the social media stuff... it is fun as hell most of the time and information has never flowed faster than it does now. Twitter>Hoopshype.

There were two different fans who posted video I believe. It's still really tasteless and I think Lebron was totally in the right to call it out.

I knew someone would bring this up as I was typing it, and I figured I didn't really care. I was ranting from my phone, not typing an essay. Anyway, I'm glad you were sort of able to follow along.

Ya I get it. I'm in the box complaining about players in the box. I even point that out in my rant and it has been pointed out multiple times in this thread. I'm glad you were able to pick up on that. I'm just wondering if fans feel a disconnect or if they enjoy the soap opera aspect?

I definitely agree that we are going through a phase of high level accelerated interaction pattern changes in our age. Twitter is a fantastic example for this. And this change sometimes shows pathetic sides of things you did not know and idolized alongside the conflict between generations.

But this certainly is not limited with athletes. In fact Twitter helps evening things for the good of fans. Now you can reach out to unreachable people. We are on the same platform. You can say FY to a Lebron post and he will read it. So I think it adds to communication becoming more universal and interaction gap becoming more narrow.

Maybe so... The numbers would tell you that most sports are more popular than ever. It just seems like social media breeds so much negativity. I wonder if fans or players will get tired of it all, especially the negativity. I think there will be a point of over-saturation, for me it seems to be happening quickly.

It wouldn't be the first time someone thought that "technology" was ruining something great it one way or another.

I am actually a big fan of social media and sports. It is an amazing live update on your teams. Personnel moves, FO decisions, training camps, trades, injuries, rehab...

Also they are right in a sense with their "don't understand comments". None of us are elite millionaire athletes. Their personal opinions do not bother me. I'm following them because they play for the Jazz, not because I look to them for social, religious, political... guidance. I have no problem with them using their voice how they see fit.

I don't. It's just freakin overloaded everywhere you look. It's impossible to watch any games without all the he said she said bs not to mention the "political opinions" of all these guys that need attention.

I've been watching most regular-season games on mute for about 2 seasons. Try it.

Is there multiple people talking? Such short paragraphs. I'm confused?

You should have at least 3 sentences before starting a new paragraph bruh.

lol. Bruh still using writing tips from 4th grade.

It's more than that... it's more than just a generational gap too. I'm not that old. I work on a college campus with college age students all day. I feel like the gap is widening with players. I find them more annoying than ever.

You mean you are growin up? How cute!

Wait till ya git my age son an don't give a rats arse what people think of ya. How wide ya think the gap is gonna be than?

Best part of athletics is when they exit their sphere of sports and try to impact the world positively.

**** anyone who tries to constrain any human of his or her ambition to change the world

There is a point that people who are making insane amounts of money for playing a schoolyard game, and have been told their whole lives they are the best, who were always the top athlete in their high school, who had recruiters fawning over them, people telling them they were first round NBA material, etc. etc. are disconnected from "normal" people. That is kind of a duh that is no different now than it was in the 90's and really as long as salaries for professional players jumped into the millions. It is just much more open due to social media than it was before.

This is really no different from the phenomenon of child abduction reportings and stats vs perception, in that over the past like 50 years child abduction stats are completely flat, but the hysteria over it is at an all-time high since every single one gets reported and tweeted and retweeted so now you get an atmosphere where you get reported to CPS if you let your kid cross the street without an armed guard and the complaints are actually taken seriously. The level of media and social media coverage of every single event no matter how mundane pushes the perceptions of everything way out of proportion to the reality.

Depends on how they want to change it IMO.

Edit: I have no problem with these athletes using their voice and stage.

It's like athletes are actual people and have thoughts and opinions.

they are.

but we look to sports to unite us! forget about the worlds problems for however long the game takes.

sure these players have freedom of speech opinions and what not.

but why alienate half of your fanbase.

if i am sitting down to watch a game, and collin keapernack takes a knee. he is basically saying to me and about ha,lf of the fans! yu guys are wrong i am right! you are supporting evil etc etc.

now thier is a divide, and people tune out.

and now he is paying the price.

i generally avoid social media when it comes to atheltes, moviestar and pornstars.

after all they are their to entertain us, not to educate me on politics or live lessons.

i dont go to a stripper for medical advise! unles she is in med school and about to finish it!

I do think it is out of proportion to the reality, but on the other end of the spectrum from before. Before we didn't hear enough about things so went on in ignorance of how often crazy thing happened. We should be in the middle, but honestly I would rather be informed with too much info, than uninformed.
