Summer League Finale: Jazz vs. Sixers, 7/9, 8:00 AM MT

Hayward has had a solid summer league, especially on the offensive end -- shooting, passing, good court awareness.

On defense, he's quicker than I thought and tries. But he can get beat off the dribble. He also needs to get stronger. Like some of the stronger opposing summer leaguers, NBA SFs will look to back him down all day long if he doesn't. But how would adding weight hamper his mobility.

I was upset with the pick but the kid did have a solid summer league for sure. That's good for the Jazz. Kudos, kid. Next up, the preseason against, and playing with, mainly real NBA players.

2nd rounder Evans was looking good. He was a force defensively in this game. (And lots of dunks.) I think he "let loose" a little being the last game and was getting alley opps and such. He really looks like a young, thin AK. Long, quick hops, weak side d helper. Nice. I was impressed with him today. Once a bigger guy (they referred to him with an "NBA body already") posted up Evans, bumped him back and then Evan recovered to quickly go straight up and block his shot. Nice again. And he was able to time his rebound pretty well. Nice again. He's not Donyell Marshall or Booze but good enough to look like a rebounder compared to his peers out there. I find it shocking that there are guys at the near-NBA level who can't time a reb. But its real.

Hayward is a bit decieving. He is stronger, bigger than just a skinny kid. His pre-draft athletic measurements were good, but he seems a bit awkward. He drives to the hole, a bit out of control, but gets the fouls. (He will not get that favor for some time in NBA.) He's dogged abit here for not being a shooter, but ends up 60%/40%/90% for the week. The part that has no deception about it is his passing. A couple of times that Gaines gave (had to) the ball to Hawyward out front so that he starts the offense, Hayward was able to initiate the offense with a good pass, with the right timing that the next player was in a position to continue the play. This is the essense of the "starting the offense" thing that appears to be nothing but is a real value. Secondly, when he did get the ball on the wing, he generally had a good pass into the post or to the cutter. he'll be a good passing wing for certain.

Both Gaines and Jeffers appeared to be playing like they should just do the scoring becuae they're "NBA players." I'm guessing they'll get the invites back to camp, but if i was coaching, i would have told them - "you are guaranteed to camp based upon your individual skills, now just go out and run the offense." I guess though if they enable others to look good its not good for them...

Ultimately, I think Evans (and of course Hayward) will be on the team next fall. Evans will d-league it for a while for certain but he's got NBA potential. I'm not thinking any of the new guys from this event was obvious to me to make camp.

Good analysis. Gaines was driving me freaking nuts with his dribbling and shoot-first, only pass when necessary philosophy. I mean, if the guy could hit FT's, maybe you want him driving and looking to get fouled. I think KOC and Sloan will look for any excuse to bring in another PG. Maybe a veteran who gets cut in T/C.

Hayward - OK, I admit I was dead wrong about this kid. He's not a skinny, white kid with no hops. You look at the 5 games and he's already picking up the offense, curling around screens, cutting to the hoop, making some good passes. Yes, he's a little out of control on his drives. I think he'll drive less with the big dogs. He'll make his living between 10-18 ft. And he has a nose for rebounds. That's good.

Evans - Jazz will have to keep him on the 13/14 man roster if he doesn't go to Europe.

Kosta was impressive. Maybe Augustine also has a shot. I was disappointed with Benson. He didn't show much, IMO.

Jeffers did o.k. Last roster spot probably comes down to him or Brewer.

Evans would play small forward on the Jazz right?

Hayward is looking more and more like a healthy Mike Dunleavy. There is definitely potential there.

That's supposed to be a compliment for Hayward? GTFO! Now!

I watched the replay again. Hayward picked up the jazz offense quickly, too bad Yata was the PG. When given the ball he initiated the offense, dribbled well, and didn't rush anything.

I really liked watching his reaction after getting a cheap-shot fore arm to his head after teh whistle today. He looked up at the bigger player that hit him as if to say: Really dude? You're trying to make ateam with that move?

Then he jumped up and hit the foul shots.

His out side shot was better than the %29 he shot at butler, but will get even better with some coaching from Horny.

He will be fabulos with the first team and will lead the second unit--I think he is already better at initiating the offense than ronnie P. or Sunndi Gaines.

He shot over 40% as a Freshman and 36% for his career. The 29% number is just being used by people that don't like the pick.

I'm glad you are coming around on my boy. You are right, Hayward will never be an elite slasher, but he has the ability to finish in a variety of ways around the rim. He's a good enough athlete to finish on the break against defenders, knows how to draw contact and get to the line, and also has a nice floater game that he didn't show at all in summer league. I hate to toot my own horn, but my analysis of Hayward as an NBA player has been spot on so far...and yes, I know it's just summer league.

Are you serious? GTFO? Dunleavy averaged 20 Pts, 5 Reb, 4.5 assists and a steal per game the season before his injury. Everyone on this board would bow down to you and Kevin O'Connor if he ends up averaging that.

I would be thrilled if Hayward can produce the #'s Dunleavy was getting before his injury last year. Dunleavy was a top 5 pick anyway wasn't he? So I have no problem with the comparing the 2.

I just got absolutely owned. I had no idea Dunleavy ever put up numbers like that. +1 rep to you, my friend.

They have a similar style - good passers, take smart shots, get to the free throw line, make their teams better. We will see, but that comparison keeps me hopeful.

He was a nobody on the Warriors - went to Indiana in a good system and killed it. He plays exactly like Hayward - from what I saw. A little more aggressive than Hayward though. Apology accepted.
