What's new

Summer League Thread

Whether you were high/low on Bilal to begin with, there hasn't been much to shift opinion. It is two SL games after all. His physical tools have been on full display, and that was the primary reason for drafting him. I think he's pretty unique and special here....not just from a length/vertical standpoint but how smoothly he moves. You see it in transition, his drives to the basket, and defensively especially. The hints of playmaking/passing are there as well even if his teammates boofed the assist. OTOH, his rawness is also on full display. He needs to tighten up his handle a little bit and obviously become a better shooter, but mechanics look really good. He's also very skinny and will need to add strength, that will help him out a ton around the basket. But these are all things we knew about him already. You liked him for the raw physical tools and potential or you hated him for the rawness and how far away he is. There's a reason why he's Exum-ish.

I wish he had better/less selfish guards on his team who don't freeze him out, but he's been fairly aggressive when he actually does get the ball which is good. He had a really good stretch with consecutive buckets+the huge block and then didn't touch the ball until the 4th quarter. Gotta love summer league.

I've only watched a few full games and quite a few highlights of summer league, but I feel like there haven't been too many surprises for me. It feels like I was able to get a really good idea of who everybody was and how they might look in the NBA with pre draft videos/scouting reports.

At this point it will depend on the individual work ethic and circumstances of each prospect to determine how they adjust to the NBA and maximize their potential. It will be an exciting draft class to monitor all of their careers. I'm definitely extra invested in this draft class as I did way more draft prep than I've ever done.

It definitely is super cool doing all of the draft prep and being so invested in guys then watching them play.

How has Whitmore looked?

I only watched half of his first game and then the highlights of his second game. He is really strong and athletic, but didn't have a lot of court awareness. I came away with the impression that he is going to take longer than expected to develop, but I still think he has star potential if he can put it all together.

I will definitely let you rub me down next year. That is very generous of you and I will tip you well.

I look forward to meeting you!

I’m not one to toot my own horn often, but I really do take pride in my work.
I try to mix deep tissue for healing with relaxation and mobility work and sometimes stretching. There is kind of a threshold on deep tissue you cannot pass or you’ll end up doing more damage than good.
I usually get a “best massage of my life” or a “no one has ever done those techniques on me before” every day.

Tivoli village is a fancy part of Summerlin (rich people area) and TheNOW is a boutique massage establishment. However, I’ll probably be working at one of the casinos by this time next year.

My endgame plan is to have a big 5th wheel remodeled to provide a mobile service for sports massage/ medical massage/ post op lymphatic massage

Next year I’ll make sure to keep this window open during summer league and make a post to remind everyone. No matter the haters I accumulate jazzfanz is a great community and I consider partial family just because I’m always on here lurking.

He's going to need other people to get him time and space to do his thing. He's not going to get that in SL, where he's trying to be the #1 guy. I think he can be a solid complementary player like MPJ.
If my team just passed on Scoot Henderson to draft a complementary piece, I'd be pretty upset.

My biggest dissapointment of the draft was Sensebaugh over Leonard Miller or a few other late firsts that fell.

My second biggest dissapointtment was opting to go with Hendricks in lieu of trading up to grab Jarace Walker or Anthony Black. I liked both of them a lot. It's unfair whether that will be a big deal or not, but both look really good so far and Hen is sitting on his dricks.

The other dissapointment on draft night was getting a player I really wasn't sold on in Keyonte. But he is proving me wrong so far. He does get stuffed at the rim too easily (my biggest fear for him) and his shot % from 3 is just 34% across 4 games (my second biggest fear being low fg%) and his defense at times is REALLY poor... as in, not interested in the slightest poor (my last main fear with Key) but he just looks so fluid and like he has the IT factor. I love to be proven wrong when we get great play for the Jazz.

I wonder if stats exist for NBA FO's success rate in the draft over the long-term? I know in the NFL they have some stats that suggest that all NFL FOs have very similar hit/bust rates in the draft at respective positions in the draft and thus the biggest advantages actually come from how you are able to move in the draft and accumulate extra picks, rather than relying that you will be better evaluator than the rest of the league. I wonder if the NBA is similar...

Ryan... you can check my posts... did I think Desmond would be that good. Nope... did I and about 75% of the board (maybe slight exaggeration) think McDaniels or Bane was the obvious choice... yes.

Also weird he wants the "receipts" out there... The Jazz quite literally have to live with the receipts for the most part. Not sure he will get much credit if Bilal is any good and you had him right where he was drafted.
