What's new

The official countdown til Dragic thread.

I don't get ROOT with the awful cable package at the U. So I've hardly seen the Jazz at all this year. Is Exum already a bust? Between him, Burke (who I thought had been playing better tbh.) and a healthy Burks are we still so bad at guard that we need to trade a bunch of dudes and max out a fringe all star?

I asking in all honesty, I know almost nothing about the team.

Burke has been improving but still is not very good.
Exum looks like crap, but it's to early to call him a bust..... we have to hope for ALOT of improvement.
Burks at this point in his career is an average player. (Hopefully he makes a jump in his 5th year like favors and Hayward did..... and hopefully being healthy will help, assuming he is healthy next year)

Definitely not an ideal situation but it could be worse

Eh. It's a tank year through development and everybody still needs tons of work. I'm pretty happy with the job Quin is doing. What I'd like to see now is for the team to really focus on the development of Kanter, Burke and Exum for the rest of this season. Starting lineup of Gobert, Favors, Hayward, Exum and Burke. Bring Kanter in off the bench (and have him play primarily with Rudy) and bring Jingles in for Burke when you want Dante to slide over to PG. Sprinkle in Booker, Evans and Millsap and shut Hood down for the rest of the season to focus on his health. His contribution is more important for next year.

Keep an open mind as far as trades are concerned, but really see what you have with your Core players (Gobert, Favors, Hayward and Exum) while trying to raise the trade value of Kanter and Burke in the process. If you decide to keep them, fine. . . but if a deal for a potential franchise player comes about, be ready and willing to pull the trigger with all those assets you've been collecting. I wouldn't trade Kanter and/or Burke for peanuts, but would gladly see them go after a young All Star or potential All Star if an opportunity arises.

I don't see any of these strategies messing with the tank, but it might give them a better idea of where they are and what steps need to be taken next.

Good post
I agree with all of it

This year nothing will happen... I do hope we are aggressive in free agency though with the main targets being a veteran PG and a wing shooter. There are some options in the less than max players that I think could be had. I think Dragic will have so many suitors that we won't have a shot... I'll bet Phoenix has to max him, in which case either Bledsoe or Thomas would be available. I'd prefer Thomas because of his contract and Bledsoe seems to always be hurt.

Do you know what the most stupid thing Phoenix could do at this moment? Helping someone like us making sure we`ll finish higher than the Lakers in the standings.

Looking at trends, the odds of Jazz finishing below the Lakers are vanishingly small. I doubt this would factor into their decision logic at all.

Phoenix are getting the Lakers pick if it is outside of the top 5. Handing us Dragic would make us much better and the chances that we finish below LA would be very low. Not only would Phoenix be giving up their best player, they would also make it less likely that they`ll get the Lakers pick.

One injury could change everything. When you have a chance to get a pick in that range, you don't make moves that could cause that pick to drop significantly in value the next year. This is an almost perfect scenario for a lightly protected pick. You want the other team to be right on the edge of keeping it. You never know where that pick might be the next year, as we Jazz fans know all too well. It might be different if the suns were contending, but they'll be lucky to sneak in. If there's any chance at all, they want that pick to be conveyed this year.

I'm sure letting Dragic walk for nothing is not what they want. I think thta he will be moved somewhere.

Maybe, but it's not likely he'll be moved to one of the few teams that could bump that pick back to them. Also, his unrestricted status would limit his value considerably. If they feel they have any chance to re-sign him, that's worth betting on compared to what he'd bring back in a rental.

I haven't been able to watch much NBA this season but it seems like Goran's value has dropped a ton? His assists are in the toilet. Is that a product of the system and not him?
