Yes, women have been oppressed in most cultures throughout history -- I say most because there have been some matrilineal societies as in some American Indian tribes. But I would say it has been much worse in Arab cultures -- for God's sake, women have had to wear veils and could only go out in public with male family members. You know any other places where that has been the case? When the families of men whose wives commit adultery murder her and think that's just? Heck, women only have been able to drive in Saudi Arabia in the last few years. Did you watch that 60 Minutes Report? And no I have not followed those situations in South America, and am not well informed about it, though I know of U.S. oppression of nations there going back centuries and more recently by our CIA. We've literally destroyed the economies of countries there that have tried to turn to socialism. To answer your question. Yes. Woman are killed for less than adultery in Latin America. And yes, the men involved oftentimes go unpunished. A strong macho culture and impunity permeates society. The worsening of the problem led to massive demostrations in several countries, called "Ni una Mas". I'm surprised you don't know about this problem in Latin America.
