What's new

Lyles is the pick at 12

People talked about Odom as a next Magic type coming out of HS. I don't like the Odom comp much. Odom was thinner, more of a big ball handler, playmaker, etc, but was never a spot up shooter and outside of a couple seasons, wasn't much of a three point threat. 31% fur his career.

I think the hope with Lyles is that he is a legit 3 pt shooter, he'll play at about 250 and do damage in the post against smaller defenders.

Odom was deadly and pretty clutch from 3 during that Lakers Championship run, IIRC.

Lyles is our savior; time to trade Favors!

1) Only a bitch negs somebody just because they got negged first. Are you a bitch? Must be.

2) I negged you because this is an idiotic statement. Nobody is saying Lyles is a savior, or anything near that. I think most reasonable people realize he's going to be a 3rd big for us.

3) Indoor was supposed to be idiot, but my phone is an indoor.

4) You're still an idiot.

OK, I'm done with the negativity... posted my impressions, my reaction, my grades of the picks... From now on, it's time to be supportive of our new rookies and hope they reach their full potential and lead us to championships(yes, plural... not 1, not 2...).

Come on everybody, lets welcome our rookies...

1..2..3... TREY ROCKS!

I'm not saying anything about anything.

start around 7:18.

man oh man. Vivek Ranadive. Great job, good effort.

I'm giving DL the benefit of the doubt, having pulled off the Gobert pick pick and all. I'm sure coach Snyder was well involved in the pick also which means that he saw a good foundation in Lyles' game to work on.

If anything it sounds like the kid is a calm dude, somewhat shy and will have to break away from that shell in a big boys league. But for now it seems like a safe pick and the reports are that he's a good team player. No to any nutcases that can disrupt what the Jazz are starting to build here.

Cy was not too happy, too, he's just trying to switch to a more positive mode, as am I now. We can't do anything but support our rookies now and try to help them succeed.

I will be be rooting for both Lyles and Hanlan and hoping they become great players for the Jazz...

GO JAZZ!
Ya cy hated the pick at first, then realized everyone else hated the pick too so of course he decided to like the pick.
Cy gonna cy

My take was they wanted Kaminsky because he best fit the need for a stretch 4, but they took the best player left that fit what they thought Kaminsky would bring. And if you compare the two -- Lyles is only 19 and Kaminsky 22. At the same stage, Kaminsky averaged 2 points a game for Wisconsin. This is another player we're just going to have to wait and see if he was the right pick. But he seems to have great upside.

(he made sure to mention Burks took him to the woodshed every time,
No doubt.
Lyles shouldn't feel bad though, going one on one against Burks is not going to end well for anyone

Yes, I wanted Booker because you can never have enough good shooting, but after sleeping on it, I'm OK with the Lyles pick.
1. Booker would have duplicated Hood and probably wouldn't have good enough minutes to be a rhythm shooter.
2. Lyles covered 3's in college and proved he could move his feet. That's a unique skill for a 6'10 guy and will help on switches.
3. The Jazz are hanging their hat on player development and if anyone can make Lyles a stretch 4, it's the Jazz.
4. He does have an opportunity to get bigger and stronger and could even grow.
5. At least he's not Frank Kaminski.

Gobert & Favors' weakness is they can't guard quicker 4's.
That is simply not true. Don't mistake being rim-protection addicts to being unable to guard the perimeter, they are both way ahead of the curve in that regard relative their size. If you're talking about them being exploited in small ball lineups (where they are forced to guard a non-big) then they should work their size advantage better or that will be the go-to strategy for opposing teams (their inability to punish the mismatch is their biggest weakness). I'm not sure Lyles really alters anything in the dynamic just discussed.

I don't know who Lyles' comp is*. I really can't think of one. But I'm okay with the pick. Like anyone else, I want to be in love with it, but I'm not, which is okay. I hope the Jazz work some magic on that shot as that will be a HUGE boon (maybe even a pre-requisite) to his effectiveness when considering his pre-existing skillset.

*with a gun to my head I'm going to say Odom

Yeah but Odom didn't start out like that neither did he? I still remember him when he was playing Center for the Miami Heat.

Odom had a great handle coming out of RI. You were probably a pre-teen then, so best to listen to others.

brutal, legalistic, etc.

Odom never was a Center. Odom has always been a swing player in a PF's body. His handle was amazing for someone his size. His shot sucked for years.

The comparison doesn't make sense.

If Channing Frye and Boris Diaw had a baby it would be Trey Lyles.
