If Hayward Leaves?

You know Gordon I started my career in Utah, but I won a championship in Boston....

Not if he leaves. If the Jazz go on another lottery run. I'm not ready to start rooting for losses again just yet.

They won't be tanking for sure. They will try and retool around Rudy the best they can. At worst, they'll be a borderline playoff team IMO, and things could work out better than a lot of people think. Rodney Hood has the ability to become much better than he was this year. Giving him a bigger role offensively and having JJ here to work with him, he very well could take the next step towards being an all-star.

We also have some other guys who could break out and surprise people. Before this year, I was convinced that Gobert would never improve his hands to the point he did this year. Imagine if he gets even better and one or more of our other players takes a big step up next year.

Losing Hayward will suck and we'll surely take a step back, but a lot of things could happen in our favor, so it's way too soon to be throwing in the towel.

With Utah finishing as #5 seed while having wins against all the top sides and a promising young core I would expect the NBA to give them more nationally televised games next year.

I know the Wolves were given a lot of televised games this year which was a terrible decision by the league because they weren't ready and I had to watch a lot of trash/blow out games.

Hopefully Utah's performance this year = more televised games = more exposure for Gobert/Hayward = more sponsorship opportunities.

Borderline playoff team is about it though. Without 2 Allstar caliber players we won't be able to attract any FA's.

Our only hope then would be Dante elevating his game significantly or we'll need to put Rudy in the gym for a year and tank. I have a feeling if we tried to tank, Rudy would be straight out the door, he's a competitor and would hate everything about it.

What if Hayward went to Boston, we trade Rudy to Boston (forgive me for even suggesting it) for their -'17 #1 pick plus their '18 Brooklyn pick and we trade those picks to Philly for Ben Simmons...

Whatever happens I'll be super sad if Hayward leaves and I was never able to see this team play to its potential.

You would trade Gobert for Ben Simmons?

Forgive? Sure I'll forgive you. In fact, I'd like to do it in person, if you'll just send me your address, and I'll get my bag of doorknobs, er my forgiveness book of forgiveness, and I'll be right over.

Seriously though, any talk of trading Rudy is quitter talk. Utah has at least two years to try and make something work around him before they even would have to consider the idea of trading him to avoid losing him.

Let's just stop with the panic move talk already. You don't trade a guy like Rudy, who just signed a long term contract, just because you suffered a setback. oi

If Hayward and Hill both leave(seems like Hill is tied to Hayward, from what he said at exit interviews), I see 3 options really:

1. Retool around Gobert, trying to win as many games as possible - you try to sign players in free agency that will help win right away - Danilo Gallinari, try to trade for Bledsoe using Favors + stuff, opportunistically pluck free agents and other players via trade that will shore up the rotation(Wilson Chandler comes to mind(might have to give up a pick for him), maybe get Lin or Deron or Teodosic as a PG.

2. Rebuild around Gobert - clean everything you can but Gobert for future assets(This would include JJ, Favors, possibly Hood). Give Dante the ball as a PG and tell him it's his team now, let him see what he can do. No stops, no leash, just go berserk, we don't care if he makes a ton of mistakes, we don't care if we lose a ton of games... au contraire - if Dante's PG skills improve while we are losing a ton of games, that's good. Resign Ingles with the idea of selling him for future assets at next trade deadline. Gobert wants bigger offensive role? He want's post ups? Or isos? Maybe the ocasional 3 pointer? Sure... give it to him. Same as with Dante - results don't matter, lets see what he can develop and what he can't, test his limits offensively, especially if it leads to less wins. Try to get the best pick we can. The top of next year's draft seems pretty good. Doncic, Porter Jr... Bamba. Try to get one of the premier ones. If Gobert gets nicked around All-star break... shut him down. Give Bolomboy(or our rookies) the chance to shine. Pick all 4 rookies and give them legit playing time. See what you have in them and if any of them shows surprising developmental spurt or skills.

3. Burn it to the ground (use Gobert to jumpstart the rebuild) - see "Rebuild around Gobert", but in this case in addition to the other moves, trade Gobert for the bank. If Boston for example gives up Fultz + BKN 2018 for Gobert(he's pretty much the perfect missing piece for them, he covers all their weaknesses and makes them strengths - elite rebounding, interior defense, help/weakside defense). Start from zero for the Jazz, but with two high end assets(Fultz + BKN pick) + possibly high Jazz pick in next year's draft).

I honestly have no idea which one I prefer. I think the one that I hate the most is the retool option. I don't think we will be able to retool quickly and well enough to make it worth it. I don't see a retool path that would make us as good as we were this year for the duration of Gobert's contract and in 3 years we will have to start thinking about keeping Gobert, having wasted 3 years of his prime on the tradmill.

In any case, to me Hayward leaving will be devastating for this team. He is not replacable right now, IMO...

Hayward won't leave. Why? Because it would be taking less money and a lesser role to go to a less stable and unknown environment for maybe (and it's really big *** MAYBE) a teeny tiny better chance to win a championship. The Jazz have a star at center, a 50 win team, a young and still growing team, plenty of assets to improve the squad via trade and the draft. There's no reason for him to leave right now.

Can we just /thread?

Any option that includes trading Gobert shouldn't be an option.

I only mentioned it because I had read posts about "blowing the team up". Ben Simmons is one of the only players I'd ever consider giving Rudy up for.

Even if Hayward bails I'm still really excited to see Rudy and Dante on the floor together.

If Hayward leaves, we trade Diaw's attractive nonguaranteed contract, Joe Johnson's expiring, Favors' expiring. We need to use these assets (along with 2nd rounders) to bump up in the draft from #23 and/or #30. We probably take back a bad contract or two to make more happen.

I would target getting up to draft somebody like Monk. He has a very high ceiling for being an alpha dog.

I then sign Paul Millsap.

Primary roster of:
Exum, Neto
Monk, Burks
Hood
Millsap, Lyles, Bolomboy
Gobert
Plus a couple more late/2nd picks. We fill in with more free agent signings.

If we lose Hayward, we trim the fat and stay playoffs relevant with Millsap. Play the youth.
