Stephen A Smith & Jalen Rose - Mitchell is ROY

Media matters.

The dunk contest matters.

Acollades matter.

Him feeling like he isn't missing out on anything being here matters.

Winning matters.

If the Jazz keep this up and Mitchell can get back to better efficiency, all of this adds up to him winning the damn thing and that probably goes some way to his baseline feelings about this situation.

The easier schedule after the break filled with tanking teams is going to loosen up defenses for Mitchell. This run could be like Exum's rookie year when he came onto the scene after the break. Our D broke the will of other teams and Rudy was eating souls. DM could go on a tear and the efficiency police can go home.

Simmons should win it. He’s an elite defender (not good, not very good-elite) and pretty much better than Mitchell at everything other than shooting.

He’s going to creep up over 20 pts per game and get awfully close to 20/4/4... I think the rest will be predicated on team success.

We miss the playoffs and it’s a no... make it as a 6 seed then yes... 7/8 maybe?

Also if Embiid misses time Bens numbers will go to crap. His TS% without Joel is like 10% lower. I also think his scoring is trending the wrong way... defenses can load up the paint and neuter him a bit.

Will be a close race... both guys well deserving so far.

But DM is so much better than him at shooting and it is so critical that it might be enough.

Bens average shot distance is about the same as Trevor booker. If Embiid didn’t create all the gravity he does not sure the paint is as open for him.

Also, DM is very impressive in creating with the lack of spacing some of our personnel creates.

I could see it either way... obviously rooting for our guy doe.

You would then think that Simmons should have more than .3 steals per game than DM, and more than .5 blocks per game than DM, but he doesn't. Plus DM turns the ball over 1 time per game lass than Simmons.

And wow, .568 ft%.

The most damning thing for me is what happens to him when Embiid is off the court. It might be fluky but he/they are so much worse when Embiid is out. I think the guy gets so much defensive attention that it makes life so much easier for other guys.

That's what I hear (I need to watch more of the 76ers who are definitely a fun watch). Didn't Mitchell score the final 10 points against the Spurs? Rookies just don't do that, much less Simmons who doesn't have that in him. Yet it seems like just another day at the office for DM.

I'm a #1 DM Homer. On the bandwagon since summer league, when I called him a cross between Dame (offense) and Bradley (pre-regression defense) He is going to be great.

I'm also a Sixers season ticket holder. They are both amazing and only going to get better. For the season, it is a tossup. For the career, 32/32 GMs would draft Simmons over DM, knowing what they know today. DM may become a perennial all-star. Simmons may become an all-time great.

For this year, I'm pulling for DM to win ROY with passion. I don't think the case has been made.

Also, Stephen A getting on the bandwagon does not help DM's case. The dude is a blowhard, not a serious analyst.

DM has one intangible over Simmons that every GM covets, and that is the ability to take over and close a game. GMs who play it safe take Ben. GMs who go for the jugular take DM.

Truth is neither choice may be the wrong one.

I didn't realize how poor Mitchell has been on defense this year. All three of them make great points. Kellerman killed it with the stats though.

If DM pulls out 2 more 40pt games, or a 50pt game I think he makes it a lot harder to not pick him.

I’m going to softly criticize Donovan on his defense, just because he prides himself so much on it. Watching some games he does get lost and has gotten beat in a lot more situations than I ever thought he would on defense. He is however playing basketball more than he ever has and is taking on a heavy offensive load with defenses grinding on him every night so it’s more understandable.

Want to see him win ROY, but he’s gonna have to have an amazing stretch to accomplish it. Simmons gets the award if votes were held today.

He didn't mention the defensive metric he used. DM isn't as good as Ben there but defensive metrics are very noisy.

Ben is basically a worse shooter than Rubio when Embiid isn't on the floor... Imagine if DM had Embiid to take attention away from him... how much more efficient would he be?

On the defensive metric... if he used Defensive - RPM David West is the best defensive player by that metric. Kyle Anderson is 11th, Tyus Jones is 15th, Lonzo Ball 41st..
Joe Ingles is 121st, Ricky 185th, DM 328th

Anyway I think DM has some flaws but he makes some great plays on defense and is generally quite solid and switches between quite a few positions. He gets caught in the blender a bit, but I want to see what he can do in a larger sample size with a healthy Rudy.

And the Jazz are a lot worse with Rudy out. Neither Simmons or Mitchell is the best player on their team.

I think it ends up being a Co-ROTY award this year. It's the only thing that seems fair, unless Utah continues their ridiculous pace and finishes with a top 5 seed (and Philly just stays in the 6-8 seed range).
